Exeter City Aims to Maintain Strong Home Form Against Rotherham
Exeter City faces Rotherham United today in a crucial League One match at St James Park, seeking to extend their impressive home form. Currently positioned 11th in the league, the Grecians have gone six matches unbeaten, securing four wins and two draws. This performance places them close to both the playoff spots and the relegation zone, highlighting the competitive nature of the league.
Rotherham, on the other hand, started the season as strong contenders for promotion, backed by their largest budget to date at this level. However, their campaign has not gone as planned, leaving them second from bottom in the league. Despite this disappointing start, the Millers are just two points away from safety, illustrating the tight standings in the division. A recent eight-match losing streak was halted by a draw against AFC Wimbledon, followed by a 2-1 victory over Northampton Town, indicating a potential turnaround.
Exeter manager Gary Caldwell expressed caution regarding Rotherham’s position, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of League One. “Nothing surprises me in League One this year,” he stated. Caldwell emphasized the competitiveness of the league, noting that many teams, including those typically relegation-bound, have exceeded expectations this season.
Caldwell’s assessment reflects the reality that even teams like Rotherham can pose challenges, given their recent form. Despite their struggles, Caldwell recognizes that Rotherham has demonstrated their capability with improved recent performances.
Exeter City’s success this season is no accident. Their unbeaten run has included victories against AFC Wimbledon, Luton Town, Stevenage, and Port Vale, alongside draws at Huddersfield Town and Reading. Home matches have been particularly fruitful, with five consecutive wins at St James Park, during which they have not conceded a single goal.
“Our home performances have always been strong,” Caldwell remarked. “We’ve created momentum and confidence is key. Our crowd has been fantastic, especially during evening matches. The atmosphere at St James Park is special, particularly in the winter months.” He encouraged supporters to continue their vocal backing, stating that maintaining focus is essential for ongoing success.
In terms of player availability, Jack McMillan is doubtful for the match after suffering a recurrence of a groin strain against Reading. Meanwhile, Ryan Rydel is in contention after training consistently over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, Danny Andrew faces a setback and is expected to remain sidelined for several more weeks. Carlos Mendes Gomes, who scored in the recent victory against Port Vale, is also available for selection after being rested midweek.
As the match approaches, Exeter City is keen to build on their recent successes and maintain their home advantage. With the support of their fans, they aim to secure another vital three points in what promises to be an engaging encounter against Rotherham United.
