Welsh Sheep Genetics Programme Drives Financial Gains for Farmers
The Welsh Sheep Genetics Programme (WSGP) has reported remarkable successes, showcasing the potential of genetic advancements to enhance both the economic stability and environmental sustainability of sheep farming in Wales. A thorough review conducted in 2025 has revealed significant financial returns and scientific breakthroughs, underscoring the vital role of genetic improvement in Welsh sheep flocks.
With 87 performance-recording flocks across Wales, the programme encompasses over 14,500 ewes. This extensive farmer engagement is yielding tangible financial benefits. The review indicates an average annual margin uplift of £3.50 per ewe, resulting from a cumulative improvement rate of £0.91 per ewe per year.
Participating flocks have also experienced notable productivity enhancements. The average lamb weight increased by 1kg, while lamb survival rates improved by 3%, further boosting the economic viability of Welsh farming operations.
Will Sawday, a sheep farmer from Hay-on-Wye and active participant in the WSGP, expressed his gratitude for the programme. “We have been performance recording for 30 years, and it has become an integral tool for our genetic improvement. For maternal traits, we have found that using solely your eyes as a measure is not good enough,” he stated. He emphasized the programme’s value, stating, “It has brought so much value to our business in allowing us to record for many more traits and collect much more data that I otherwise wouldn’t have done. I can already see the genetic improvements.”
The WSGP has elevated performance recording to new heights. Farmers are not only enhancing existing data collection but also gathering information on new traits, such as methane emissions. This focus on sustainability is crucial, as it aims to improve the resilience of their businesses and address climate-related challenges.
The programme has positioned Wales as a leader in livestock innovation, directly aligning with key objectives set by the Welsh Government, particularly in areas of climate change mitigation and the adoption of innovative technologies.
In a groundbreaking move, the WSGP introduced Genomic Estimated Breeding Values (GEBVs) to participating flocks in June 2023. This marked a significant milestone as it was the first instance of genomics being applied in sheep globally. The programme’s success is not just local; it has become a national asset, accounting for 70% of the UK’s sheep genotypes, with over 77,000 genotypes recorded to date.
Addressing significant challenges in the sheep farming industry, the WSGP is developing new genetic tools aimed at breeding animals that are less susceptible to gastrointestinal parasites, utilizing the ‘Parasite Plus’ Estimated Breeding Value (EBV). Additionally, the programme is exploring the potential for breeding animals that emit less methane, aligning with global sustainability goals.
While the WSGP has achieved substantial early success, it is essential to recognize that genetic improvement is a long-term strategy. Sustained commitment is necessary to fully realize the benefits of these advancements. The newly recruited flocks are now reaching a critical phase, as the first lambs recorded at the start of the programme are joining the breeding groups.
Eirwen Williams, Director of Service Delivery (Rural Programmes) at Mentera, commented on the significance of genetic improvement, stating, “Genetic improvement is a proven, effective means of improving the sustainability of our hill and maternal flocks.”
The Welsh Sheep Genetics Programme continues to transform the landscape of sheep farming in Wales, blending economic growth with sustainable practices that will benefit farmers and the environment alike.
