The Second China–US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, organized by New York University, successfully wrapped up on November 22, 2023, at Vanderbilt Hall within the NYU School of Law. This event brought together over 300 founders and representatives from investment institutions across China and the United States. Having founded multiple startups herself, Huang views early-stage companies through a lens that extends beyond mere investment. Her extensive experience in building products and teams from the ground up allows her to assess AI projects with a structured clarity, distinguishing between conceptual ideas and those with viable commercial pathways.

When asked about the qualities that define an exceptional AI founder, Huang emphasized the importance of foresight. “The most critical capability of a founder is not IQ, but foresight,” she stated. “You must act one or two steps ahead of the market. If you simply follow trends, you will always be chasing the tail end of a wave.” She asserted that true founders must anticipate industry shifts before they occur and have the courage to validate their ideas early.

Huang expressed the belief that while the U.S. tech industry is open on a technical level, women still face challenges in building confidence and presence within the founder community. “Entrepreneurship is an extremely competitive game; it does not slow down just because you are a woman,” she remarked. Huang urged women founders to adopt the same level of ambition as their male counterparts, stating, “You must position yourself as a founder, competing with the strongest players in the market.”

As the competition showcased a variety of AI projects, Huang identified several technical trends. Many teams utilized open-source large models as the foundation of their technology stack, reflecting a significant shift in the landscape. “China’s models have advanced rapidly in the past two years,” she noted, highlighting how systems such as Qwen and DeepSeek are empowering founders globally. For early-stage teams, reduced costs and shorter experimentation cycles facilitate quicker paths to achieving product-market fit.

Huang summarized the current phase as one where “resources are accessible; execution is the differentiator.” She underscored that technology is no longer the scarcest resource; rather, it is the judgment and execution that will ultimately determine success. Founders who can identify genuine scenarios, pain points, and monetizable workflows are positioned to excel in this evolving landscape.

As the event concluded, the direction of AI technology and the entrepreneurial spirit showcased throughout the competition became increasingly evident. The organizers reaffirmed their commitment to fostering ongoing exchanges between founders from both countries in the realms of AI, technology, and innovation.
