Entrepreneurs Drive AI Innovation at NYU’s China–US Competition

The Second China–US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, organized by New York University, successfully wrapped up on November 22, 2023, at Vanderbilt Hall within the NYU School of Law. This event brought together over 300 founders and representatives from investment institutions across China and the United States. The competition aimed to enhance bilateral exchanges in technological innovation and early-stage entrepreneurship, fostering closer integration between the two countries in terms of talent, technology, and capital.

This year’s competition was themed “Openness, Innovation, and Connection,” placing a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI), large-model applications, cross-border technology services, and enterprise solutions. According to the organizers, both nations possess unique strengths in AI and the broader startup ecosystem. The event served as a vital platform for young entrepreneurs to transcend geographic boundaries, showcase their innovations, and cultivate cross-cultural cooperation in entrepreneurship.

A notable trend among the eight finalists was the integration of AI technologies into various industry sectors. Several teams presented innovative solutions that applied AI to multimedia marketing, new-energy technology, gaming, and healthcare. This focus on practical applications of AI highlighted the growing recognition of its potential across diverse fields.

Insights from an Industry Expert

To gain further insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by AI founders, we spoke with one of the judges, Chenxi Huang (also known as Chelsey), a well-regarded quantitative investor and entrepreneurship mentor. Having founded multiple startups herself, Huang views early-stage companies through a lens that extends beyond mere investment. Her extensive experience in building products and teams from the ground up allows her to assess AI projects with a structured clarity, distinguishing between conceptual ideas and those with viable commercial pathways.

When asked about the qualities that define an exceptional AI founder, Huang emphasized the importance of foresight. “The most critical capability of a founder is not IQ, but foresight,” she stated. “You must act one or two steps ahead of the market. If you simply follow trends, you will always be chasing the tail end of a wave.” She asserted that true founders must anticipate industry shifts before they occur and have the courage to validate their ideas early.

Team dynamics also play a crucial role in entrepreneurship, according to Huang. “Entrepreneurship is not about one person grinding alone—it’s about whether you can inspire others to follow your conviction,” she said. In her view, the key to success in the early stages is not the size of the team but rather its alignment and collective rhythm. A unified team often outperforms an individual technical breakthrough.

Challenges for Women Founders

The conversation also touched on the situation of women founders in Silicon Valley’s innovation ecosystem. Huang expressed the belief that while the U.S. tech industry is open on a technical level, women still face challenges in building confidence and presence within the founder community. “Entrepreneurship is an extremely competitive game; it does not slow down just because you are a woman,” she remarked. Huang urged women founders to adopt the same level of ambition as their male counterparts, stating, “You must position yourself as a founder, competing with the strongest players in the market.”

As the competition showcased a variety of AI projects, Huang identified several technical trends. Many teams utilized open-source large models as the foundation of their technology stack, reflecting a significant shift in the landscape. “China’s models have advanced rapidly in the past two years,” she noted, highlighting how systems such as Qwen and DeepSeek are empowering founders globally. For early-stage teams, reduced costs and shorter experimentation cycles facilitate quicker paths to achieving product-market fit.

Huang summarized the current phase as one where “resources are accessible; execution is the differentiator.” She underscored that technology is no longer the scarcest resource; rather, it is the judgment and execution that will ultimately determine success. Founders who can identify genuine scenarios, pain points, and monetizable workflows are positioned to excel in this evolving landscape.
