Tuchel Calls for Wembley Crowd Support as England Prepares for World Cup

Thomas Tuchel, head coach of the England national football team, emphasized the crucial role fans play in boosting team performance during a recent press conference. Following a 3-0 friendly victory against Wales, Tuchel expressed his desire for a more vibrant atmosphere at Wembley Stadium, suggesting that the crowd can significantly influence the game.
Wembley Atmosphere Needs Boost
In Tuchel’s view, the England supporters should not underestimate their potential impact, particularly during moments when the game may lose momentum. Despite the team’s impressive display against Wales, which included early goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka, the atmosphere at Wembley left the coach wanting more. He remarked, “I felt like the boys and the team deserved a bit more of a spark,” highlighting his frustration with the crowd’s perceived lack of engagement.
The match against Wales followed a convincing 5-0 win in Serbia last month, marking a strong qualification run for the 2024 World Cup. However, Tuchel pointed out that while there were numerous chances and victories, the crowd’s support was lacking, particularly in the second half. “If they keep the thing going again it could help us,” he added, suggesting that a more enthusiastic crowd could have led to additional scoring opportunities.
Looking Ahead to Qualification
England’s next challenge comes on October 17, 2023, when they face Latvia, a match that could see them qualify for the World Cup with two games to spare. Tuchel noted that positive results in Group K could set up the team for further success, as they prepare to welcome Serbia back to Wembley for their final qualification match before heading to Albania next month.
Despite discussions about the possibility of taking matches away from Wembley to enhance atmosphere, Tuchel dismissed this idea, stating, “No, we don’t need to make a big thing.” He expressed confidence in the stadium’s ability to support the team, indicating that the focus should remain on their performances rather than shifting venues.
As the team looks ahead, they are reportedly considering matches against Asian and South American teams to bolster their preparations for the World Cup. Japan, currently ranked 19th in the world, and Uruguay, led by Marcelo Bielsa and ranked 15th, are potential opponents for friendly matches scheduled in March 2024.
With England sitting fourth in the FIFA world rankings, Tuchel’s leadership and the support from fans at Wembley will be vital as they aim for success on the international stage. He concluded with optimism, noting that he appreciates the support from fans in previous matches and anticipates strong backing in their upcoming fixtures.
