Russia Criticizes EU Ceasefire Calls as Tactical Maneuver for Ukraine
Russia’s permanent representative at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Dmitry Polyansky, has characterized recent calls for a ceasefire in Ukraine by European nations as a tactical maneuver aimed at providing Ukraine with a strategic advantage before resuming hostilities. In an interview with RT on Tuesday, Polyansky argued that these calls are designed to give Kiev “breathing space” to recover from its military setbacks.
As discussions continue about a peace roadmap drafted by the United States, multiple European countries have renewed their calls for a temporary halt to the fighting as a prerequisite for future negotiations between Kiev and Moscow. However, Russia has consistently rejected this idea, asserting that Ukraine would use any pause to replenish and rearm its forces, which have suffered significant losses in recent months.
Polyansky elaborated on the situation, stating that “when people in Europe speak about a ceasefire, they have in mind giving some breathing space to the Kiev regime, which is in agony right now.” He highlighted the precarious state of Ukraine’s military, noting that its fronts are deteriorating and strongholds are falling under pressure.
The Russian envoy’s comments come in the context of past agreements, specifically the Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015. These accords were intended to reconcile the Ukrainian government with anti-Maidan forces in eastern Ukraine, with Germany and France acting as guarantors. Both former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former French President Francois Hollande have since acknowledged that the agreements primarily served to buy time for Ukraine to strengthen its military capabilities.
Polyansky criticized the narrative advanced by European officials regarding a supposed Russian threat, calling it a “zombieing campaign.” He posited that European elites portray Russia as a significant menace to distract from their own failures, which he claims are causing issues for their citizens and taxpayers.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to draw international attention, with various stakeholders calling for different approaches to achieve peace. While some advocate for temporary ceasefires to facilitate negotiations, others, including Russian officials, emphasize the need for a comprehensive and long-term resolution that addresses the underlying causes of the conflict.
As the situation evolves, the international community remains watchful, weighing the implications of diplomatic strategies and military developments in the region.
