Protests Erupt in Nigeria Following Reports of Khamenei’s Death
Protests erupted in major Nigerian cities following reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a series of coordinated airstrikes attributed to the United States and Israel. Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria gathered in cities such as Lagos, Kano, and Sokoto, condemning the actions of both nations and calling for Nigeria to take a firmer stance on international affairs. The demonstrations were met with a significant police presence, particularly in Sokoto, where authorities heightened security measures.
In Bauchi State, the situation escalated as residents fled the town of Mansur in the Alkaleri Local Government Area due to a terrorist siege. This incident forced thousands to seek refuge in neighbouring Gombe State, following a previous attack on a Joint Task Force base in the Gwana District. The state governor, Bala Mohammed, announced an emergency fund of ₦50 million to respond to the crisis, while security patrols were intensified in affected areas.
Local Protests and Political Responses
In Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo joined local protests against the Benin Electricity Distribution Company in Benin City, reigniting discussions surrounding energy issues. This rally coincides with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s renewed campaign promise regarding electricity supply, which has been a point of contention for citizens experiencing frequent grid collapses. Political figure Peter Obi referenced these failures during the protests, emphasizing the need for accountability from the government.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Council confirmed Tunji Disu as the substantive Inspector General of Police. Clips showcasing his judo achievements have gained traction on social media, highlighting his diverse background.
In a separate incident, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State faced scrutiny after a tense exchange with journalist Chika Nwabueze, prompting a call for an apology from the International Press Centre.
International Developments and Memorials
On the international front, deposition footage surfaced featuring former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton distancing themselves from controversial figure Jeffrey Epstein. This release has reignited discussions about the implications of their past associations.
In Columbia, South Carolina, thousands gathered to honour civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, with a procession and memorial service held in his home state ahead of his forthcoming funeral in Chicago. The gathering served as a powerful reminder of Jackson’s enduring legacy in the fight for civil rights.
Additionally, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke celebrated the 84th birthday of Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, leading songs in tribute to the prominent religious figure.
As these events unfold, they reflect the diverse landscape of political activism, public sentiment, and international relations in Nigeria and beyond.
