Over 1,000 NNPP Members Join APC as Barau Declares Momentum Shift

In a significant political shift in Kano State, over 1,000 members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement have officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). This event, held in the Kano metropolis on October 24, 2023, was led by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, who stated that the NNPP has lost momentum in the region.

According to a statement from his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the defectors, gathered under the banner of “Kwankwasiyya One Blood,” symbolically discarded their red caps as they announced their allegiance to the ruling party. The leader of the group, Aminu Murtala Minjibir, expressed that their decision to join the APC was motivated by the developmental efforts of President Bola Tinubu and Senator Barau, which they believe have had a positive impact in Kano and throughout Nigeria.

Minjibir remarked, “There are more than 1,000 in this hall today, and we have members spread across all the 44 local government areas of Kano State. This is a historic day in our lives as we officially join the train of success, the APC. Senator Barau has been a shining light for the people of Kano, and we are proud to identify with him.”

Barau welcomed the new members, calling their defection a timely and astute decision. He characterized the NNPP as a “mushroom party,” suggesting it has diminished to a limited presence within Kano. He stated, “We are here to welcome a group of hardworking men and women who have decided to join our great party, the APC. You have made the right choice.”

He emphasized that the APC is not only the largest political party in Nigeria but also the biggest in Africa. “Our government is delivering on development and inclusivity. I see no reason for anyone to remain in a party that has lost its direction,” he added.

In his remarks, Barau commended President Tinubu for his unwavering support for the region, highlighting that the president has consistently responded to requests aimed at enhancing the welfare of the people in Kano. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been doing a lot for the North and for Kano in particular. All he needs now is our support and prayers. With your commitment and our collective effort, we will continue to move this state and our country forward,” Barau concluded.

As the APC continues to consolidate its influence in Kano, this defection marks a notable realignment in the political landscape, raising questions about the future of the NNPP in the region.
