Next Welsh Government Must Address Women’s In-Work Poverty
The next Welsh government is urged to prioritize the economic well-being of women, particularly those facing in-work poverty. UNISON Cymru, a prominent trade union, emphasizes that addressing the challenges faced by low-paid women must be central to the government’s plans.
UNISON Cymru’s call aligns with a growing recognition of the systemic issues contributing to economic inequality in Wales. In-work poverty, defined as living below the poverty line despite being employed, disproportionately affects women, particularly those in part-time roles or sectors with low wages.
Economic Disparities Highlighted
According to recent statistics, women make up a significant portion of the workforce in low-paying sectors such as retail and hospitality. Many of these roles offer little financial stability, pushing workers into a cycle of poverty. UNISON Cymru’s General Secretary, Wendy Chamberlain, stated that the next government must take decisive action to lift these women out of poverty.
Chamberlain emphasized, “Women are working hard, often juggling multiple roles, yet they find themselves struggling to make ends meet. Our next administration must implement policies that ensure fair wages and equitable working conditions.”
The urgency of this issue is underscored by the upcoming 2024 Welsh elections, where candidates will be assessed on their commitment to addressing these economic disparities. UNISON Cymru has outlined several recommendations, including raising the minimum wage, enhancing support for childcare, and ensuring better job security for women.
Policy Recommendations for Change
Among the proposed measures is the introduction of a comprehensive wage review aimed at lifting salaries in sectors where women are predominantly employed. Additionally, UNISON Cymru advocates for improved access to training and development opportunities, enabling women to advance in their careers and break free from low-paid positions.
The trade union also calls for the incorporation of gender equality measures into all government policies. This would ensure that women’s needs are prioritized across various sectors, from healthcare to education, ultimately fostering a more inclusive economic environment.
As the election approaches, the focus on women’s economic empowerment is likely to intensify. With a growing number of advocacy groups voicing similar concerns, the next Welsh government faces significant pressure to act decisively on this critical issue.
UNISON Cymru’s commitment to advocating for low-paid women sets a clear agenda for the future. The time for change is now, and the next government has the opportunity to create lasting impact by prioritizing the needs of those who contribute significantly to the economy yet remain vulnerable to poverty.
