New York City Socialists Mobilize 4,000 to Counter ICE Actions

New York City’s political landscape is shifting as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) prepares to mobilize a substantial volunteer force to counter federal immigration enforcement actions. The DSA is training over 4,000 activists to form ‘rapid response’ battalions aimed at challenging Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities amid rising concerns about a federal crackdown on undocumented migrants.

At a recent meeting in Midtown Manhattan, leaders from the DSA’s Immigrant Justice Working Group detailed their strategy for what they anticipate as an intensified wave of federal enforcement. The group’s approach is informed by tactics used during protests in Minnesota, following the tragic death of Renee Good, a local anti-ICE campaigner who was shot by an ICE agent earlier this month. This incident has galvanized activists across the United States and serves as a pivotal reference point for organizers in New York.

The DSA is preparing to train 2,000 members as well as 2,000 non-members, supported by approximately 50 trainers. Organizers plan to enhance the DSA’s 24/7 ICE hotline and recruit volunteers fluent in languages such as Pular, Creole, and Fulani, ensuring effective communication with diverse immigrant communities. At the recent meeting, volunteers were instructed on a ‘form a crowd, stay loud’ tactic designed to draw attention to ICE activities and discourage enforcement actions through visible civil engagement.

Activists intend to utilize whistles as a distinctive element of their strategy. According to immigration attorney Leemah Nasrati, “The whistles carry far and wide,” creating a system that alerts local residents when ICE agents are present. This approach aims to transform neighborhoods into early-warning systems, allowing for the rapid assembly of volunteers to support affected individuals.

The DSA’s patrols and canvassing efforts will target areas with high immigrant populations, such as Chinatown, Bushwick, and Jackson Heights.
