Montenegrin Fans’ Response Sparks Controversy with Serbian Church

Tensions have resurfaced between the Serbian Orthodox Church and Montenegrin fans following recent comments from Gojko Perović, a prominent priest. The response from Montenegrin supporters has drawn criticism, particularly from Serbian Church representatives, who view it as a reaction to what they perceive as Croatian nationalist provocations.

The Građanska inicijativa (GI) “21. maj” issued a statement addressing Perović’s remarks. They argue that the core issue disturbing the Serbian Church in Montenegro stems from the way Montenegrin fans have confronted Croatian nationalism, particularly with reference to historical truths surrounding World War II. The statement emphasizes the need to confront historical narratives that have been manipulated over time.

According to the GI, the Serbian Church is particularly sensitive to the recognition of collaborators during World War II. They assert that acknowledging these historical facts undermines the Church’s propagandistic narratives. The statement condemns Perović’s attempts to equate the Partisan and Chetnik movements, arguing that such comparisons are not only misleading but also harmful to Montenegrin society.

Furthermore, the GI’s statement argues that attempts to equate communist actions against ideological opponents with the ethnic cleansing perpetrated by Chetnik forces during that period are fundamentally flawed. They maintain that historical science has already provided a clear context and evaluation of these events, rendering further debate unnecessary.

The GI also took issue with several of Perović’s assertions regarding the role of the Church in Montenegro’s historical transition from feudalism. They highlight that the Church was largely indifferent to the shifts in governance and was, in fact, a significant obstacle to modernization. The statement outlines that the first printing press was not church-operated but state-run, and that the Petrovic dynasty played a vital role in establishing educational institutions in Montenegro.

In light of these developments, the GI emphasizes that dialogue based on historical accuracy is essential for fostering a more informed public discourse. The ongoing tensions reflect broader issues of identity and historical interpretation in the region, underscoring the challenges that arise from differing perspectives on the past. As Montenegro continues to navigate its complex historical landscape, the role of institutions like the Church and their influence on national identity will remain a critical point of discussion.
