INEC Prepares for Anambra Election with 2.8 Million Voters
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that approximately 2.8 million registered voters are expected to participate in the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2023. This figure includes an influx of around 140,000 new voters, as many individuals have also sought to transfer their voter registrations to the state.
In light of the upcoming election, the Police Command in Anambra has announced its commitment to enhance security measures throughout the state. Authorities intend to deploy additional personnel to prevent any potential misconduct before, during, and after the electoral process.
Election Preparations and Technology Deployment
During a recent meeting in Abuja, Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, outlined the logistical plans for the election. INEC will utilize 5,903 Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS) devices, with an additional 978 BVAS held in reserve. The total deployment includes devices for 5,720 polling units across Anambra State, along with 183 splits for polling stations where voter turnout is expected to exceed capacity.
Dr. Agwu emphasized that the use of BVAS has not presented significant challenges in previous elections within Anambra. The reserve units are intended to address any unforeseen issues that may arise on election day. She also noted that 16 political parties and their candidates have been cleared to contest in this election.
Ensuring a Peaceful Voting Environment
Dr. Agwu reassured the public that comprehensive preparations are underway to facilitate a smooth and orderly election process. Training for all personnel involved in the election has been completed, ensuring that they are well-equipped to perform their roles effectively.
The commitment from law enforcement and the stringent measures being put in place aim to foster a safe environment for voters. As Anambra State approaches this significant electoral event, INEC remains focused on upholding the integrity of the election process while encouraging active participation from the electorate.
