A dedicated care worker from Wrexham has been awarded the prestigious Smile Award for his exceptional commitment to enhancing the lives of residents at the Bodlondeb Care Home. Emmanuel Dela Cruz, 37, has been recognised for his infectious enthusiasm, warmth, and willingness to go above and beyond in his role, which has made a significant impact on the community.

The Smile Award, determined by votes from both staff and residents at Pendine Park, celebrates individuals who contribute to a joyful atmosphere. Dela Cruz’s manager, Arlene Elano, described him as “the heart of Bodlondeb,” noting his constant positivity and readiness to support others. “He’s always smiling, always singing, and always ready to help,” Elano stated. “Emmanuel truly represents what Pendine is all about.”

Dela Cruz, who moved to the UK from the Philippines four years ago, initially worked as a supervisor at a local Primark store. However, after discussions with his wife, a nurse, he decided to transition into care work. “I met Arlene at a Filipino community gathering in Wrexham and asked her about the possibility of working in care, and she offered me the opportunity to join Pendine Park,” Dela Cruz explained.

His journey into the world of care was not without apprehension. “At first, I was a bit scared because it wasn’t anything I’d thought about before,” he admitted. “But Pendine provides very good training on how to deal with people, including those with dementia.” This training has enabled him to connect deeply with residents, many of whom find joy in his engaging personality.

Building Connections Through Joy

Dela Cruz has made a name for himself not only through his cheerful disposition but also through his interactive activities with residents. He embraced games like dominoes, learning strategies from residents who excel at the game. His passion also extends to music; he often sings for the residents, particularly enjoying classic Elvis songs. “People from the Philippines like to sing, so I sing for our residents,” he said. “Even the residents with dementia can remember the songs, and I think it’s good for them to sing.”

His enthusiasm for his role resonates throughout the care home. Elano highlighted, “Everywhere he goes, he’s smiling. He never complains, and when we need him, he’s there. He’s just a great staff member who works with dedication and commitment.” The close-knit environment at Bodlondeb is a testament to the supportive culture fostered by workers like Dela Cruz.

The Smile Awards, organised by Sarah Edwards, Pendine Park’s consultant artist in residence, aim to recognise and celebrate the contributions of staff members who uplift the community. Edwards noted, “We encourage everyone to vote, and the Smile Awards are very popular. It’s always important to celebrate the great work we all do, and for everybody’s contribution to be recognised.”

Dela Cruz’s journey continues as he aspires to advance his career within Pendine Park. With his passion for care and his commitment to making a difference, he sets a remarkable example for others in the field. The recognition he has received through the Smile Award not only affirms his efforts but also inspires those around him to strive for excellence in their roles.
