Montenegro Government Delays Discussion on DNP’s Identity Initiatives
The government of Montenegro has opted not to discuss the Democratic Front’s (DNP) initiative regarding support for identity issues, including the Serbian language and changes to citizenship laws, according to unofficial sources from the news outlet Pobjeda. During the meeting held on October 18, 2023, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić indicated that the identity-related issues raised by the DNP would be forwarded to the parliament for further consideration.
Spajić directed Milun Zogović, a government member from the DNP, to present these matters to the National Assembly. He noted that the issue concerning the wastewater treatment facility in Botun has been resolved, and the guarantees provided by the government can be confirmed by the parliament.
The DNP previously announced intentions for its ministers to advocate for support regarding identity matters and to promote dialogue about the resolution of the collector issue in Botun. They have reiterated that if the government fails to act on these initiatives, the DNP will withdraw from power both at the national level and in the capital, Podgorica.
Spajić emphasized earlier in the day that the appropriate venue for initiating discussions about the Serbian language is the Montenegrin Assembly. In a statement on the platform “X,” he acknowledged the legitimacy of raising the issue but reinforced that the path toward European integration remains the government’s priority. He asserted that a “coercive model of cooperation will not be tolerated.”
The DNP’s initiative highlights ongoing tensions surrounding identity issues in Montenegro, where the Serbian language and citizenship laws are contentious topics. The government’s reluctance to engage directly with these demands may have implications for its stability, especially if the DNP follows through on its threat to withdraw from governance.
As the situation unfolds, the response from the parliament and the broader implications for Montenegro’s political landscape will be closely watched. The outcome of these discussions will play a crucial role in shaping the future of identity politics in the country.
