Locals Intensify Protests with Blockades at Botun Construction Site
Residents of Botun have escalated their protests against local construction activities, implementing a blockade at the construction site from 06:00 to 12:00 daily. During these hours, workers are barred from entering the work area. This action reflects a growing discontent with the authorities, as local leaders demand accountability and immediate dialogue regarding the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant.
Milan Knežević, leader of the Democratic People’s Party, stated last week that the protesters aim to bring about a change in local governance. He expressed his commitment to stand alongside the Botun residents until their demands are met. Knežević’s remarks were reported by RTCG, emphasizing the community’s frustration with unfulfilled promises and selective enforcement of laws by the authorities.
The protesters have called upon key figures, including Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, Mayor of Podgorica Saša Mujović, and Aleksandar Nišavić, the director of the water supply company, to engage with them in negotiations. They seek a resolution to the ongoing issues surrounding the construction project, which they claim has been imposed without adequate community input or consideration.
In response to the protests, Saša Mujović stated that the city is open to dialogue, but only on sustainable terms. He acknowledged the concerns raised by the Botun residents, noting the importance of maintaining a transparent and lawful process regarding local development projects.
The Zeta Municipality had previously passed a decision prohibiting the construction of the wastewater treatment plant in Botun, a point the residents stress as a critical aspect of their argument. They challenge the legitimacy of both local and state decisions regarding the project, asserting that previous commitments have not been honored.
The situation in Botun highlights the broader issues of community engagement and governmental accountability in urban planning. As protests continue, the residents remain firm in their stance, demanding respect for their rights and a reconsideration of the planned construction that they believe will adversely affect their community.
