Lionel Messi Celebrated at the White House Following MLS Cup Win
On March 7, 2024, President Donald Trump honored Lionel Messi and his teammates from Inter Miami at the White House, recognizing their victory in the 2022 MLS Cup. Inter Miami secured the championship by defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps in December, marking a significant achievement in Major League Soccer.
During the ceremony, Trump praised Messi, who was named the league’s MVP for the second consecutive season. “Leo, you came in and you won, and that’s something very hard to do,” Trump remarked, acknowledging the intense pressure Messi faces as a player. Messi, who joined Inter Miami in 2023, remained silent throughout the event.
Notable Attendees and Celebrations
The event included several high-profile guests, such as Inter Miami stars Luis Suárez, Tadeo Allende, and Rodrigo De Paul. Also present were MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Andrew Giuliani, the head of the White House’s World Cup task force. Retired baseball legend Alex Rodriguez and members of Trump’s cabinet rounded out the guest list.
Inter Miami made history as the first MLS team to visit the White House during Trump’s administration. Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, played a pivotal role in leading Argentina to the World Cup title in 2022 and is anticipated to represent his country again this summer at the upcoming World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Soccer’s Global Context and Challenges
As excitement builds for the World Cup, recent geopolitical tensions have raised concerns. The conflict with Iran has overshadowed preparations, particularly after military actions involving the United States and Israel. Iran is among the 48 teams participating in the tournament, with matches scheduled in various U.S. cities, including SoFi Stadium in California and Seattle.
“I really don’t care if Iran participates,” Trump stated in a recent interview with Politico, reflecting on the nation’s current state. “I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes.”
There is uncertainty surrounding what would happen if Iran were to withdraw from the tournament, as no team has opted out after qualifying in over 75 years. The World Cup is set to commence on June 11, 2024, with the opening match featuring Mexico against South Africa in Mexico City.
During the White House ceremony, Trump reminisced about witnessing the legendary Brazilian player Pele in action, asserting that Messi might surpass Pele’s legacy. “You may be better than Pele,” Trump remarked, engaging the audience in a spirited discussion about soccer greatness.
Inter Miami’s owner, Jorge Mas, expressed pride in the team’s achievements and its impact on American soccer, stating, “We can play with the big boys, we can play with the heavyweights. Our league can be one of the top leagues in the world.” He emphasized the team’s commitment to future success, hoping that this celebration would not be their last.
This event marked Messi’s inaugural visit to the White House. He was offered the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the Biden administration last year but was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts. Following the ceremony, Inter Miami is set to compete against D.C. United on March 9, 2024.
