A severe cold wave has swept across Montenegro, leading to record low temperatures in various regions. According to the Zavod za Hidrometeorologiju i seizmologiju Crne Gore (Montenegro’s Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology), the village of Kosanica, near Pljevlja, recorded an unprecedented temperature of -21.4 °C at 19:00 local time. This chilling weather is expected to persist throughout the night.

The temperature readings have highlighted the extreme conditions affecting the country. Following Kosanica, readings from other locations indicate significant drops as well. In Pljevlja, an automated measuring station has been installed but is yet to become operational. Nonetheless, the available data shows a temperature of -11 °C recorded in Pljevlja.

Regional Temperature Overview

The cold has not only impacted Kosanica but has also been felt across northern Montenegro. The mountainous area around Žabljak reported a temperature of -9.6 °C, while nearby Njegovuđa saw temperatures plummet to -14.9 °C. Other nearby locations, such as Kovren, registered -10.6 °C, illustrating the widespread nature of this cold snap.

Snowfall has accompanied these frigid temperatures, contributing to a significant winter landscape. As of the latest reports, the highest snowfall recorded was in Berane, Žabljak, and Pljevlja. Specifically, at 07:00 this morning, Kolašin had accumulated 35 cm of snow, while Žabljak measured 24 cm, and Pljevlja reported 19 cm.

The cold weather poses challenges for residents and travelers alike, with authorities urging caution. The ongoing winter conditions are expected to have various impacts on daily life, from transportation disruptions to increased energy demands for heating. As the evening progresses, it is crucial for communities to prepare for the sustained cold temperatures in the days ahead.

With winter firmly in place, Montenegro is experiencing one of its coldest nights in recent history, leaving many to brace for what this weather pattern may bring in the coming days.
