US Freezes Child Care Funding Nationwide Amid Fraud Investigation

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has suspended federal child care funding to all states while it investigates allegations of widespread fraud in daycare centers, particularly in Minnesota. According to an unnamed agency official, this decision will remain in effect until states can demonstrate that federal funds are being utilized appropriately.

A comprehensive review will require states to submit specific administrative data. HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon confirmed that even those states not implicated in fraudulent activities must comply with this request. States suspected of fraud will face stricter requirements, including providing documentation such as attendance records, licensing information, and inspection reports.

Nixon emphasized, “The onus is on the state to make sure that these funds, these federal dollars, taxpayer dollars, are being used for legitimate purposes.” This crackdown follows a series of allegations that Minnesota had diverted significant taxpayer money to fraudulent daycare operations over the past decade. The HHS previously froze all child care payments to Minnesota and requested a thorough audit from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Governor Walz has defended his administration and criticized the federal government’s actions. He highlighted the state’s cultural diversity and large Somali population while accusing President Donald Trump of politicizing the issue for his own agenda. “This is Trump’s long game. We’ve spent years cracking down on fraudsters,” Walz stated. “It’s a serious issue – but this has been his plan all along. He’s politicizing the issue to defund programs that help Minnesotans.”

The investigation gained traction due to a YouTube inquiry by conservative influencer Nick Shirley. In a detailed video, Shirley alleged a large-scale fraud scheme involving Somali-run childcare centers, estimating more than $110 million in fraudulent claims.

In response to the growing concerns, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced a “massive investigation into childcare and other rampant fraud.” Additionally, FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that resources have been “surged” to Minnesota, warning that this situation may only represent “the tip of a very large iceberg.” He noted that perpetrators could face serious consequences, including “denaturalization and deportation.”

The HHS’s decisive actions reflect a broader effort to ensure accountability in the use of federal funds, particularly as the agency works to maintain public trust amid rising scrutiny.
