Couple Faces $200,000 Medical Bill After Premature Birth in US
A couple from the UK found themselves facing a staggering medical bill of approximately $200,000 after their baby was born prematurely while they were touring in the United States. Folk musicians Issy Ferris and Archie Sylvester were in Nashville for a performance when Issy, who was 33 weeks pregnant, experienced serious health complications related to pre-eclampsia, a condition that can pose significant risks during pregnancy.
While preparing for the second-to-last gig of their tour, Issy began feeling unwell, initially attributing her symptoms to severe food poisoning. However, her condition quickly escalated, leading to her diagnosis of pre-eclampsia at a local hospital. This serious complication necessitated an emergency C-section, resulting in the birth of their son, Lucky, on September 19, 2022, weighing only 4 lbs 1 oz.
The couple’s travel insurance initially denied coverage for the medical expenses incurred during Issy’s treatment. A lengthy ten-month battle ensued, forcing them to consider selling their home in Somerset to manage the overwhelming costs. Eventually, after hiring legal representation, the insurers agreed to cover both the medical expenses and the couple’s legal fees.
Health Crisis on Tour
Issy Ferris discovered she was pregnant in spring 2022 and experienced an uneventful pregnancy until the couple’s trip to the US. The duo had ensured they obtained comprehensive travel insurance that accounted for Issy’s pregnancy, including coverage for pre-eclampsia, as stated in the policy’s fine print.
After performing two gigs in Nashville and taking a day off to rehearse, Issy began experiencing severe symptoms. Following several hours of vomiting and chest pain, she sought medical assistance at a local hospital. Despite efforts to stabilize her condition, the medical team determined that her situation was critical, leading to her transfer to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown for an immediate C-section.
Archie described the moment as “the most terrifying” of their lives. He recounted how quickly the situation changed from a belief that Issy simply had a stomach bug to a life-threatening emergency.
Legal Battle and Emotional Toll
Baby Lucky was immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after birth, where he remained for three weeks. The couple faced additional challenges as they navigated this difficult period, including the emotional toll of being separated from their newborn.
Issy expressed her frustration with the insurance company, stating that they attempted to limit coverage to only her treatment for pre-eclampsia, despite the reality that the only definitive solution was to give birth. The couple’s legal fight highlighted the complexities and challenges of securing appropriate medical insurance, especially during international travel.
Issy reflected on the ordeal, saying, “I spent months examining my medical records in order to build my case against a huge company who should have behaved better.” After months of stress, the couple’s persistence paid off when their insurance company finally agreed to cover the full extent of their medical expenses.
Throughout this tumultuous experience, the couple drew strength from their music. Their latest EP, titled Songs That Saw Us Through, includes tracks that resonated with them during Lucky’s time in the NICU. Archie noted the importance of these songs, stating, “If somebody else going through a similar experience can feel comforted by listening to this, that’s a really positive thought for us.”
The couple’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of comprehensive travel insurance, particularly for those traveling during pregnancy. Their story not only sheds light on the potential pitfalls of international healthcare but also emphasizes the resilience of families in the face of unexpected challenges.
