Tinubu Directs NAHCON to Cut 2026 Hajj Fares Within Two Days

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a swift reduction of the 2026 Hajj fares, prompting Vice President Kashim Shettima to instruct the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to establish new pricing within two days. This decision comes as the Nigerian naira continues to appreciate against the US dollar, a significant factor influencing pilgrimage costs.

Urgent Review of Hajj Fares

During a meeting at the State House in Abuja on Monday, Shettima emphasized the necessity of revising the fare structure to reflect the current economic climate. He urged collaboration among state officials, including governors, to streamline the process of setting and adopting the new fare.

Shettima highlighted the importance of quick action from all involved parties to ensure timely payments and remittances to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This is critical for facilitating a smooth pilgrimage experience for intending pilgrims.

Senator Ibrahim Hadeija, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, confirmed that the meeting aimed to finalize preparations for the upcoming Hajj operations, specifically addressing fare determination. “The objective is to lessen the financial burden on pilgrims, especially in light of the ongoing economic reforms under the Tinubu administration,” he stated.

Impact of Economic Reforms

Hadeija noted that the naira has been steadily appreciating, which is expected to influence the Hajj fare positively. Last year, pilgrims paid between ₦8.5 million and ₦8.6 million due to unfavorable exchange rates. Given the improvements in the currency’s value, a significant reduction in fare is anticipated.

“If we achieve what we envisage, then we will have a very significant reduction in the Hajj,” Hadeija remarked.

Dr. Mustapha Mohammad, Secretary of NAHCON, expressed optimism that the President’s directive would encourage more Muslims to undertake the pilgrimage. “The lower the Hajj fare, the more accessible it becomes for Muslim faithful. We will work diligently to ensure the fares are minimized to an affordable level,” he stated.

The Chairman of the Kebbi State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Faruk Aliyu Yaro, welcomed the presidential directive, recognizing it as a crucial intervention. “We are grateful for the efforts made by the President and Vice President to bring down the cost of Hajj fare,” he said.

As preparations for the March 2026 Hajj continue, the collaboration between government officials and NAHCON is seen as pivotal in ensuring that financial considerations do not hinder the spiritual journey of many Muslims.
