Microsoft Joins Schneider Electric in New US Energy Initiative
Microsoft, along with other notable organizations such as Sunrock, Zurich, and AlphaStruxure, has joined a new initiative led by Schneider Electric aimed at transforming energy infrastructure across the United States. The Accelerating Resilient Infrastructure Initiative brings together 20 participants to develop community-based energy systems, leveraging federal incentives to enhance energy resilience and efficiency.
The initiative seeks to rapidly scope, finance, and deploy resilient energy solutions, specifically targeting the implementation of microgrids. Schneider Electric emphasizes that this moment is crucial for US energy infrastructure, as communities increasingly look to advance their energy capabilities. Microsoft will contribute its expertise in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analysis to the initiative, fostering innovative solutions for both public and private sector organizations.
Expanding Distributed Energy Resources
Key infrastructure providers involved in the initiative include AZZO, Celsius Energy, CDM Smith, and others. Additionally, consulting firms such as Arcadis and Baringa will collaborate to enhance the initiative’s impact. Electrical distributor Graybar and the nonprofit Resilient Cities Network will also play significant roles by connecting customers with project developers and providing essential energy technologies.
According to a report from Schneider Electric’s Sustainability Research Institute, the US power grid is projected to reach a critical inflection point by 2028. At this stage, peak electricity supply may struggle to meet peak demand, thereby threatening grid reliability. The initiative aims to alleviate grid stress and lower energy costs by increasing the deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs). These include solar photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage, geothermal heat pumps, and electric vehicle charging stations.
The growing demand for microgrids reflects a shifting perspective on energy resilience. Karina Hershberg, Associate Principal at engineering firm PAE Engineers, notes that clients are increasingly interested in microgrids to gain more control over their energy usage and costs. “Every day, I’m talking with clients about their interest in microgrids, and a lot of it’s coming from an interest in energy resilience,” she stated.
Addressing Economic Impacts of Power Outages
The initiative is also timely given the rising costs associated with power outages, which are estimated to cost the US economy around US$150 billion annually. Jana Gerber, North American President of Microgrids for Schneider Electric, highlighted the urgency for resilient energy infrastructure. “This initiative brings together industry leaders to accelerate the deployment of local, future-ready energy solutions, helping communities reduce risk, control costs, and ensure continuity of critical services,” she added.
In March 2024, utility company Pacific Gas and Electric announced its support for microgrid projects through the state’s Microgrid Incentive Programme. This reflects a broader trend of utilities recognizing the importance of decentralized energy systems as a means of enhancing reliability.
As communities navigate the complexities of energy supply and demand, initiatives like the one led by Schneider Electric are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and resilient energy future.
