Kevin Rudd, Australia’s ambassador to the United States, is set to leave his diplomatic position on March 31, 2026, to assume the role of global president at the Asia Society. This new position will more than double his current salary, which is estimated at USD$330,000 per year. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed Rudd’s departure, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career.

Rudd’s upcoming role at the Asia Society, a prominent think tank focused on fostering dialogue between Asia and the United States, is expected to pay him over USD$700,000 annually. He previously held this position from 2020 until his ambassadorship began in March 2023. During his last year as president and CEO of the organization, Rudd reported an income of USD$524,007, equivalent to approximately AUD$786,000 at current exchange rates.

Rudd’s career has positioned him as a notable figure in international relations. As a fluent Mandarin speaker, he has actively engaged in important discussions surrounding U.S.-China relations and climate policy. The Asia Society operates offices in multiple global cities, including Hong Kong, Mumbai, and Tokyo, and hosts events that attract influential leaders from various sectors, including technology and finance.

The financial success of the Rudd family extends beyond Rudd’s public service. His wife, Therese Rein, is a self-made millionaire who has built a substantial business empire. In 2014, she sold part of her company, Ingeus, for an estimated AUD$190 million. Founded in 1989, Ingeus has become a major player in employment services, expanding globally and securing lucrative contracts in various countries.

Their financial portfolio includes impressive real estate investments, such as a AUD$17 million beachfront property in Noosa, purchased in 2020. The couple has also owned a luxury penthouse in Brisbane, acquired for AUD$8 million in 2016. This property features exceptional amenities and is situated in a prestigious area known for its affluent residents.

Rein’s property ventures have further augmented their wealth. In a notable transaction, she purchased a beach cottage at Sunshine Beach for AUD$6.75 million in September 2021 and quickly sold it for AUD$9.75 million just months later, netting a profit of AUD$3 million.

As Rudd prepares for his new role, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a significant financial backing that underscores the couple’s successful ventures in both public and private sectors. His leadership at the Asia Society is anticipated to continue influencing discussions on key international issues, reinforcing his status as a prominent voice in global affairs.
