Grimsby Central Library is projected to remain closed until at least **Spring 2029** as preparations continue for essential repairs and renovations. The library, which has been closed since **March 2025** due to water damage and concerns regarding asbestos, is undergoing a comprehensive assessment by the North East Lincolnshire Council’s select committee.

During a meeting held on **January 14, 2025**, the committee discussed a report outlining the estimated costs and timelines for the library’s reopening, which currently range from **£12.3 million to £13.8 million**. These estimates vary based on the extent of refurbishments required following the removal of asbestos and necessary roof repairs.

Efforts to remove asbestos from the plant room began in **December 2025**. Access to the roof is contingent upon the completion of this work, which will then allow for its inspection. The report by **WT Partnership Limited**, an external contractor, indicates the potential need for a roof replacement, with initial cost assessments estimating **£3.9 million** for the entire process, including pre-tender design work.

Future Plans for Grimsby Central Library

Once the asbestos is fully cleared, the library’s internal and external works can commence. Proposed plans include reopening the library on the basement, ground, and mezzanine floors, while external renovations could involve window replacements and other structural improvements. The report also outlines additional costs for converting upper floors into office or community spaces.

The recommendation from the select committee emphasizes the urgency of securing capital funding to prevent further deterioration of the library building. The committee has urged the council to prioritize financial support for the roof replacement and necessary repairs to address water ingress issues.

Cllr **Steve Holland**, chair of the libraries service select committee, expressed optimism regarding the library’s future. He stated, “We are confident at this stage that a solution can be found which preserves the heritage and unique architecture of the building while ensuring it is fit-for-purpose.” He acknowledged that costs remain a significant barrier that will require collective action to address.

While no final decisions have yet been made regarding the library’s future, the select committee is actively seeking community input. Individuals interested in sharing their views can contact the committee directly via email at **[email protected]**. They are encouraged to provide their contact details and a brief summary of their main points.

The scrutiny panel is scheduled to meet on **January 22, 2025**, at Grimsby Town Hall to further discuss the recommendations put forth by the libraries service select committee. As the community awaits the library’s reopening, the focus remains on ensuring a sustainable and inclusive plan for this vital cultural asset.
