Edinburgh’s Boston Bar Expands, Doubling Its Space with New Features

A well-known bar in Edinburgh has announced a significant expansion that has effectively doubled its size. The Boston Bar, located on Hanover Street, has transformed its space with a new basement area named ‘Downtown,’ enhancing its offerings to patrons. This development is aimed at enriching the bar’s unique blend of traditional Irish pub culture and the vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of Boston.
The Boston Bar has gained popularity for its lively environment, attracting a diverse clientele looking for a place to enjoy a drink. The recent expansion introduces a spacious new seating area, allowing for greater capacity and more options for socializing. The design features wooden furnishings, leather seating, and exposed sandstone walls, creating an inviting atmosphere. Handpicked antiques sourced from Ireland, the USA, and local auction houses add to the character of the space.
Welcoming Atmosphere and Diverse Offerings
The new ‘Downtown’ area caters to various group sizes, offering cozy nooks for intimate gatherings and larger high-top tables for social events. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the addition of eight large televisions throughout the venue, which will broadcast a range of sports, including Gaelic football and hurling matches.
Edward Fox, the owner of The Boston Bar, expressed his vision for the new space, stating, “We wanted Downtown to feel like a little slice of my wife’s homeland – Donegal in the heart of Edinburgh, but with a nod to Boston’s gritty charm. It’s a space that’s warm, welcoming and full of life – somewhere you can pop in for a quiet drink or make a night of it.”
To celebrate the expansion, The Boston Bar has partnered with Coors to offer a special giveaway. One winner and their guest will have the chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Boston, USA, valued at £7,000. This includes return flights from Edinburgh, four-star hotel accommodation, curated experiences, and a food and drink allowance. Interested participants can enter the competition by sharing the post on Instagram, tagging their travel partner, and following the bar’s social media accounts.
Upcoming Events and Unique Menu
The Boston Bar is already planning a lineup of events for the new space. Traditional Irish music sessions, known as seisiúns, will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays, starting on September 15, 2025, at 20:00. In addition, Irish comedy nights will launch in October, offering patrons a chance to enjoy entertainment alongside their drinks.
The venue’s menu reflects its Irish-Bostonian fusion, featuring classic pints of Guinness and a selection of craft Irish beers. Innovative cocktails, such as the Galway Girl and Fenway Old Fashioned, will also be available, providing a twist on traditional favorites.
The Boston Bar’s expansion not only increases its capacity but also enhances the overall experience for its patrons. With a focus on community engagement and cultural offerings, the bar is set to become an even more integral part of Edinburgh’s vibrant nightlife scene.
