British runner Megan Keith made headlines on February 22, 2024, by breaking the European women’s 10km record during a competitive race in Castellón, Spain. Keith clocked an impressive time of 30:07, surpassing the previous record held by Eilish McColgan by just one second. This remarkable achievement highlights Keith’s remarkable return to form this winter.

The race in Castellón is known for its fast course, and this year it also saw a new men’s European record set by Yann Schrub of France. Schrub finished in 26:43, narrowly beating the former record of Andreas Almgren, who matched his own record with a time of 26:45. Despite their personal records, the men’s race was won by Harbert Kibet of Uganda, who finished with a stunning time of 26:39. On the women’s side, Caroline Makandi Gitonga of Kenya secured victory with a time of 29:34.

Keith’s accomplishment was particularly significant as she not only broke McColgan’s record but also outpaced her in the race, with McColgan finishing sixth in 30:35. McColgan, who had recently run 30:08 in Valencia, is currently preparing for the upcoming London Marathon set for April 2024.

Reflecting on her journey, Keith expressed a sense of achievement after a challenging year. Just twelve months ago, she faced a difficult recovery period following an injury that kept her sidelined after the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 23-year-old, based in Edinburgh, gradually regained her competitive edge through last year, culminating in a commendable tenth place in the 10,000m at the World Championships held in Tokyo.

Keith’s recent success also includes a strong performance in December, where she finished as runner-up to Nadia Battocletti of Italy at the European Cross Country Championships in Portugal. Despite facing challenges at the World Cross Country Championships in Florida earlier in January, where she placed 25th, Keith’s resilience has been evident throughout her recovery.

Schrub’s performance adds another layer to the day’s achievements. The 29-year-old runner had previously won the European Cross Country title in 2023 and recently finished ninth in the world 5000m final. Like Keith, Schrub competed at the World Cross in January, securing an 11th place finish in the men’s race, and earlier this month, he clocked 7:29.38 for the 3000m indoors.

As both runners look ahead, Keith and Schrub’s remarkable performances in Castellón will undoubtedly inspire many as they continue to excel on the international stage.
