New Satellite Images Suggest Iran Reinforces Nuclear Facilities

Recent satellite imagery has intensified concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, revealing significant reinforcement at a facility linked to its nuclear program. The images, analyzed by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), indicate that Iran is enhancing its underground operations at the Mount Kolang Gaz La—also known as Pickaxe Mountain. This activity occurs amidst ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding a nuclear agreement.

Experts suggest that the bolstered tunnel entryways may serve to protect Iran’s uranium enrichment efforts. Although Iran maintains it is not pursuing nuclear weapons, former US President Donald Trump claimed in 2025 that the nation was on the verge of developing such capabilities. Following this assertion, he ordered military strikes on three underground nuclear facilities, declaring that these attacks had effectively dismantled Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity.

In a recent statement to Fox News Digital, Alireza Jafarzadeh, Deputy Director of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) in Washington, emphasized that the satellite images reflect Iran’s commitment to rebuilding its uranium enrichment capabilities. He noted, “The regime has clearly stepped up efforts to rebuild its uranium enrichment capabilities. It is preparing itself for a possible war by trying to preserve its nuclear weapons program and ensure its protection.” He described the ongoing development as particularly alarming, given that negotiations with the United States are currently underway.

Reconstruction of Key Facilities

The satellite images also highlight reconstruction activities at the Isfahan complex, one of the three uranium enrichment plants targeted during the Midnight Hammer military operation. The other facilities attacked were Fordow and Natanz. According to Jafarzadeh, similar rebuilding efforts at Natanz are also noteworthy, indicating a focus on revitalizing Iran’s centrifuge program and other uranium enrichment activities.

These developments coincide with diplomatic efforts as Iran engages in negotiations with the United States in Geneva. On February 17, 2026, a framework of “guiding principles” was reportedly agreed upon, although Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi cautioned that a formal deal is not imminent. President Trump warned that a lack of agreement could lead to “bad things,” suggesting escalating tensions.

Jafarzadeh criticized the negotiations, arguing that the Iranian regime views the talks as a strategy to buy time rather than a genuine effort to scale back its nuclear ambitions. He expressed concern that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has used the negotiation process to delay potential confrontations with the West.

The Financial Implications

The financial stakes in Iran’s nuclear efforts are significant, with Jafarzadeh estimating that the regime has invested at least $2 trillion (£1.49 trillion) in developing nuclear capabilities. He pointed out that this expenditure surpasses the total oil revenue generated since the regime’s establishment in 1979.

“Tehran is trying to salvage whatever has remained of its nuclear weapons program and quickly rebuild it,” Jafarzadeh stated. He stressed that the nuclear weapons program is perceived as a crucial tool for the regime’s survival.

As the geopolitical landscape evolves, the implications of Iran’s nuclear activities continue to raise alarms among international observers. The combination of continued military fortification and ongoing diplomatic negotiations underscores the complex and volatile nature of the situation. The world watches closely as these events unfold, with potential ramifications for regional and global security.
