Nigeria Mobilizes Police to Strengthen Security in Vulnerable Areas

The Nigeria Police Force has redeployed a significant number of officers previously assigned to VIP escort duties to enhance community policing in several vulnerable areas. This initiative aims to improve security presence in Kwara, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory. The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Friday.

This strategic move comes in response to recent terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of approximately 75 innocent villagers in Kwara State. The federal government is intensifying security operations across the North-Central region to better protect civilians in these high-risk communities. In light of these events, President Bola Tinubu launched an expanded security initiative named Operation Savannah Shield on November 26, 2026, declaring a state of emergency regarding national security.

Enhanced Security Measures and Community Engagement

The operation involves the deployment of military personnel, police units, and national forest guard contingents, all aimed at bolstering security assets in the affected areas. Minister Idris stated, “President Tinubu condemned the Kwara attacks as beastly, heartless, and emblematic of a doomed campaign by terrorists who deliberately target soft subjects.” He emphasized that the President has mandated that the full authority of the state be utilized against all individuals threatening societal peace.

As part of the enhanced security efforts, there will be increased police visibility around places of worship, particularly churches, during worship times, such as Sundays. These measures will be implemented in close collaboration with local communities and faith leaders to ensure effective communication and support.

President Tinubu has reiterated that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations will remain led by Nigerian interests and sovereignty. Furthermore, while the government is open to international cooperation, including assistance from the United States and other allies, it seeks to maintain control over its security objectives and strategies.

Minister Idris highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting Nigerian lives and upholding citizens’ fundamental rights, including the freedom to worship. The recent redeployment of police officers reflects a proactive approach to security, aiming to foster a safer environment for all residents, especially in vulnerable areas.

The measures taken under Operation Savannah Shield represent a critical step in addressing the pressing security challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in the North-Central region. The government’s actions aim to restore public confidence and ensure that local communities feel secure in their daily lives.
