Celebrating 60 Years of Art: Luka Lagator’s Exhibition Launches
Last night, the Modern Gallery hosted a celebration of the works of Luka Lagator, a notable Montenegrin painter and cartoonist, in honor of his remarkable 60 years in the creative field and his 80th birthday. The event featured the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Lagator’s artistic journey and a monograph that encapsulates his contributions to the art world.
Art as a Reflection of Existence
The exhibition, which is particularly dedicated to the city of Cetinje, transcends the traditional portrayal of the city as a mere subject. Instead, it embodies a permanent state of consciousness, representing an internal landscape where history continuously interacts with the present. This concept was brought to life through Lagator’s performance titled “Sisyphus’ Path.” During the performance, he poignantly carried a massive stone on his back, symbolizing the absurdity of human endeavor, a recurring theme in his work.
The stone, a cube covered in engravings and photographs of both historical and contemporary Cetinje, serves as a metaphor for the burdens each individual carries in life. Lagator argues that Sisyphus is not merely a mythological figure but a universal metaphor for modern humanity. He states, “Every living being on this planet is ‘Sisyphus to Sisyphus’: we all push our own stone up a personal mountain, striving to reach the top, even though another fall inevitably awaits.”
For Lagator, the moment when the stone crashes down the cliff is not a defeat but the beginning of contemplation. The descent, or the return to retrieve the stone, represents a space of silence and awareness where individuals can reflect on their existence. He emphasizes that recognizing the absurdity of life is essential for meaningful living.
Insights and Performances
During the exhibition’s opening, Lagator remarked, “I carried a large stone through this space, bringing with it my and our Cetinje, thus completing the image of this temple of the underworld and a phenomenon that I partially presented in this exhibition.” He described his work as a disordered Rubik’s cube of color scattered throughout time and space, showcasing monochromatic representations of both past and present eras in which Cetinje reflects.
Art historians Ljiljana Zekovic and Ljiljana Karadzic, along with cartoonist Darko Drljevic, shared their thoughts during the event, highlighting the significance of Lagator’s contributions to the cultural landscape. The evening was enriched by a musical performance featuring soprano Zorana Latkovic and guitarist Nikola Pejovic, adding an evocative auditory layer to the celebration.
The event not only marked a milestone in Lagator’s career but also served as a platform for engaging discussions about the role of art in confronting the absurdities of life. As attendees immersed themselves in the exhibition, they were invited to reflect on their own experiences and the inherent challenges of existence.
Lagator’s work continues to resonate deeply, encouraging viewers to engage with their own narratives while navigating the complexities of modern life. His unique perspective and artistic vision remain a vital part of the cultural dialogue in Montenegro and beyond.
