Kano Government Issues Warning to Ganduje and Barau Over Comments
The Kano State Government has raised concerns regarding statements made by former Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin about recent bandit attacks in the region. The remarks were deemed potentially disruptive to the peace and security of the state, according to Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs.
During a briefing following the state Executive Council meeting on October 13, 2023, Waiya highlighted that the government’s concern stems from the risk these comments pose to local community stability. He emphasized that such statements could instill fear and undermine collaborative security efforts between the Federal and State Governments aimed at ensuring safety in Kano.
The Commissioner further noted that within 48 hours of the comments being made, there were reports of suspected bandits infiltrating border communities within the state. This timing raised questions about whether the remarks were “premeditated or connected to the attack.” Waiya characterized the comments by Ganduje and Jibrin as unwelcome and a threat to public safety, suggesting they could encourage further bandit activity in the region.
The Kano State Government is now calling on security agencies to take appropriate action against the two leaders from the All Progressives Congress (APC). This request underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining order and protecting its citizens.
In a related context, Ganduje has recently announced plans to support the 12,000 Hisbah officers who were dismissed under the administration of current Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. His proposal includes the establishment of an independent Hisbah Commission to oversee religious and moral affairs, further complicating the political landscape in Kano.
The situation remains fluid as authorities assess the implications of these statements and their impact on local security conditions. The Kano State Government’s proactive stance reflects a broader strategy to ensure that public discourse does not compromise the safety and stability of its communities.
