US Military Launches Largest Deployment Near Iran Since Gulf War
The United States is currently executing its largest military build-up near Iran since the Gulf War, according to an analysis by Jon, a senior editor at the UK Defence Journal. On February 17, 2026, he reported a significant increase in U.S. military aircraft activity in the region, utilizing publicly available flight tracking data to compile his findings.
Jon’s assessment highlights two distinct phases of military movements over the past 48 hours. The initial phase concentrated heavily on operations involving F-35 fighter jets stationed at RAF Lakenheath, while the subsequent phase included a diverse array of aircraft types, such as F-16s, F-22s, E-3 Sentry airborne early warning aircraft, E-11A battlefield communications aircraft, and numerous aerial refuelling tankers.
In his update, Jon expressed the challenges of capturing the full extent of this activity, stating, “Missing data will be identified and filled in in the coming days; there has simply been too much for me to compile in one go today, but this paints a fairly good picture.” The scale of these operations suggests a shift towards a sustained military posture rather than routine training exercises.
Heightened Military Activity in the Region
The uptick in U.S. military presence aligns with broader regional dynamics, which have seen an increase in military deployments recently. Reports indicate plans for a significant naval concentration in the area, including two aircraft carriers and accompanying support vessels. While individual aircraft movements are not officially tied to specific operations, the sheer volume and variety of aircraft imply a serious operational intent.
Jon noted that the pace of military activity is expected to continue, stating, “The rest of this week will be very busy.” This heightened tempo raises questions about the logistical support required for such operations, particularly in terms of European bases. Jon pointed out that this marks the second instance within a month where the U.S. has relied on European locations to support its operations outside of the continental United States.
This build-up comes at a time of increased tensions in the region, with the potential for escalation affecting not only military personnel but also regional stability. The focus now turns to how this deployment will impact diplomatic relations and military strategy in the Middle East.
The ongoing developments underscore the complex nature of international military engagements, as the U.S. navigates its role and responsibilities on the global stage. As the situation evolves, observers will be watching closely for further updates on the U.S. military’s activities and the implications for regional and international security.
