An urgent search operation is currently underway in Bali for a 23-year-old British tourist, Harrison Edward Nada Kontounas, who went missing after being swept out to sea by a strong current at Legian Beach. Kontounas, who hails from East London, was swimming with friends on the afternoon of March 13, 2024, when a powerful rip current pulled him away despite warnings from lifeguards.

The incident occurred in the context of worsening weather conditions, with red flags raised on the beach to indicate dangerous surf. While Kontounas’s friends managed to return to shore, he was not seen again. The local authorities initiated rescue efforts almost immediately, deploying boats and helicopters as part of a coordinated search operation led by the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office (Basarnas Bali).

According to local officials, wind speeds exceeded 18.6 mph at the time of Kontounas’s disappearance. Nyoman Sidakarya, Head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, stated, “We urge you to be careful when engaging in outdoor activities, including beach tourism.” He confirmed that rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving a report at 18:40 WITA about a foreigner presumed to have drowned.

Sidakarya elaborated on the search efforts, noting, “Our initial step is to coordinate with witnesses and other SAR elements. If he is not found tomorrow morning, we can determine our next action plan.”

Witnesses described the sea conditions as rough and chaotic during the search. One observer, Abbey Maree, expressed her concern on social media, saying, “It was a heartbreaking afternoon on the beach watching lifeguards searching for hours to find him. The water was so rough at the time.” She emphasized the need for additional resources, such as jet skis or helicopters, to aid the search, remarking that local operations are not as extensive as those in her home country.

Rescue units have been mobilized not only at Legian Beach but also at the nearby Kelan Beach, with rubber boats launched to expand the search area. Despite these efforts, high surf and turbulent waters have posed significant challenges to the operation, as reported by NeedToKnow.

As the search continues, the community remains hopeful for a positive outcome, rallying behind Kontounas’s friends and family during this difficult time.
