Teen Arrested After Attempting to Poison Uncle Over Snoring

A high school student in Japan has been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder his uncle by spiking his miso soup with a lethal plant extract. The incident occurred around midday on July 17, 2023, in Ichihara City, located in Chiba Prefecture. Authorities report that the 18-year-old used leaves from the highly toxic oleander plant, known for its extreme lethality to humans and animals.

The teenager reportedly prepared the soup with a sufficient amount of oleander to cause serious harm. Fortunately, the uncle detected an unusual taste in the miso soup and spat it out before consuming a lethal dose. He was taken to the hospital where he suffered only minor symptoms. According to a report by News On Japan, the uncle lives with both the teenager and his mother.

The motivation behind this attempted poisoning appears to be related to the uncle’s loud snoring. During police questioning, the student confessed to his actions, stating, “I couldn’t stand his snoring anymore, so I decided to kill him.”

Oleander is an evergreen shrub commonly found in gardens and along roadways. Every part of this plant, including its leaves, stems, and flowers, contains toxic compounds that can be fatal if ingested. This incident is particularly alarming given that it follows another shocking event involving the same student earlier the same day.

Reports indicate that the teenager was also implicated in an assault at JR Chiba Station, where he allegedly attacked two women with a hammer in a restroom. The victims, aged in their 40s and 50s, were struck on their shoulders but thankfully did not sustain serious injuries. The student reportedly used a 24-centimetre hammer and expressed a desire to harm a “weaker woman—anyone would do” during his confession to authorities.

Police are continuing their investigation into both incidents, and prosecutors are considering formal charges of attempted murder against the teenager, who remains in custody. The seriousness of these events raises concerns about the safety and mental health of young individuals involved in such violent acts.
