A teacher has evaded a ban from the profession after exploiting a discount code loophole to defraud Asda of nearly £3,000 worth of groceries. Kirsti Reynolds, who worked at Prudhoe West Academy in Prudhoe, Northumberland, used a promotional code that reduced certain items to just 1p, taking advantage of the self-checkout system across various store locations in February and March 2023.

Reynolds applied the discount code specifically for rotisserie chicken, significantly reducing the costs of her shopping. In one instance, she accrued discounts totaling £1,030.77 at one store, while in another, she managed to save £1,700. Following her admission of fraud by false representation, she received a 12-month community order and was ordered to repay Asda during a hearing at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

A panel from the Teacher Regulation Agency reviewed her case after the conviction. While recognizing that Reynolds had violated professional standards, the panel chose not to suspend or ban her from teaching. The report highlighted her remorse and acknowledgment of the impact her actions had on her family, colleagues, and the teaching profession. It also stated that there was no evidence to suggest any risk to her students.

Decision maker Marc Cavey expressed that while her misconduct was serious and could tarnish the teaching profession’s reputation, a prohibition order was not warranted. He stated, “I have concluded that a prohibition order is not proportionate or in the public interest. While the misconduct found in this case was undoubtedly serious, I do not think that preventing Ms Reynolds from working as a teacher would serve any useful purpose.”

The panel’s decision underscored the importance of accountability while also recognizing Reynolds’ efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future. The publication of the findings aims to reinforce the standards expected within the teaching profession, making it clear what behavior is unacceptable.
