Asda has introduced a £1 meal deal aimed specifically at pensioners, available until the end of February. This initiative, designed to alleviate financial pressures during the winter months, is operational in 212 of the supermarket chain’s cafés across the UK. The offer includes a hot meal and unlimited drinks for only £1, helping to provide a warm and affordable option for those over 60.

The deal, which has garnered significant attention, features a choice of either tomato or chicken soup paired with a side of bread. Customers can also enjoy unlimited tea or coffee, making it a comforting option during the colder season. Jordan Cummings, the buying manager for cafés and concessions at Asda, highlighted the importance of this initiative amid rising living costs. “We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm on a fixed income,” Cummings stated.

The Winter Warmers campaign was relaunched in November, aiming to provide both nourishment and a social setting for older adults. Cummings noted that more than 500,000 winter warmer meals were sold in 2024, indicating a strong demand for budget-friendly options during this challenging season.

The initiative has received endorsement from the Met Office, which emphasizes the need for older adults to maintain warmth. Their website advises that as people age, their bodies require more effort to stay warm. “From about the age of 55, we lose around 1% of our muscle mass every year, which is essential for keeping warm,” the Met Office noted. They recommend consuming at least one hot meal daily and staying active to mitigate the effects of colder temperatures.

In addition to this meal deal, resources are available for those struggling with heating costs. Age UK provides assistance through its “manage your money in winter” webpage, offering guidance on how to navigate financial challenges during the winter months.

Asda’s initiative represents a broader commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in the community. By providing affordable meal options, the supermarket aims to create a more inclusive atmosphere for seniors, encouraging social interaction and a sense of community during the colder months.
