As Wells entered the bank, he handed a teller a note demanding $250,000 in cash, threatening that the collar bomb would detonate if his demands were not met. In July 2007, federal prosecutors announced that Barnes and Diehl-Armstrong were responsible for Wells’ death. They also implicated Wells himself, suggesting he had a limited involvement in the planning due to his financial troubles. This revelation prompted protests from Wells’ family, who denied any suggestion that he was complicit in the crime.

In September 2008, Barnes pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges and received a reduced sentence of 22.5 years in federal prison due to his cooperation in the case. Before his death on June 20, 2019, he claimed that Wells initially thought the bomb was fake and attempted to withdraw from the crime once he realized it was real.

Diehl-Armstrong was convicted in November 2010 of armed bank robbery and conspiracy, receiving a life sentence plus an additional 30 years. She maintained throughout her trial that Rothstein was the true mastermind, while Wells was involved in the planning. Rothstein died of lymphoma less than a year after Wells’ death.
