Ukraine has begun 2026 with a wave of violence, as Russian forces launched an unprecedented attack involving 205 drones overnight. According to regional authorities, the strikes on January 1 resulted in the deaths of at least two civilians and injuries to at least 16 others across multiple regions.

Ukrainian air defense systems intercepted an impressive 176 of the drones. Despite this, 24 managed to breach defenses, targeting 15 locations, as reported by Ukraine’s air force. In southern Ukraine’s Kherson Oblast, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin confirmed one fatality and four injuries due to the strikes. Meanwhile, in the eastern Donetsk Oblast, another death was reported by Governor Vadym Filashkin.

The situation in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, where around 75% is under Russian control, remains dire. Local authorities indicated that nine individuals were injured amid ongoing Russian aggression. Over the past 24 hours, Russian forces executed 612 strikes on 24 settlements in Zaporizhzhia, according to the Kyiv Independent.

In Kharkiv Oblast, one of the most affected areas during the invasion, eight settlements experienced attacks. Two civilians, a 76-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman, were injured, as per Governor Oleh Syniehubov. The assaults caused damage to civilian infrastructure across five districts, impacting homes, power lines, and vehicles. Further north, in Sumy Oblast, a 25-year-old man sustained injuries during a nighttime strike. Russian forces attacked 37 settlements in the region a total of 75 times within the same 24-hour period.

The drone attacks also extended to Odesa and Volyn Oblasts, targeting both energy and civilian infrastructure during New Year’s night. The Energy Ministry reported that strikes in Volyn Oblast led to fires and power outages for many residents.

Since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the United Nations has documented a staggering total of 53,006 civilian casualties in Ukraine, including 14,534 deaths. The UN Monitoring Mission in Ukraine noted that casualties for the first ten months of 2025 reached 12,062, surpassing the total for the entirety of 2024, which was 9,112.

On the other side of the conflict, Ukraine has intensified its campaign against Russian oil refineries, reportedly with covert training assistance from the CIA. Throughout 2025, Ukrainian forces executed numerous strikes against these vital targets, particularly in the latter half of the year. The operations have led to fuel shortages in parts of Russia and increased prices, compounding production issues and affecting exports. US intelligence estimates suggest that these strikes could be costing the Russian economy up to £55 million per day.

As the conflict continues, the human toll and economic repercussions are becoming increasingly evident on both sides. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing military activities impacting civilian life and infrastructure across Ukraine.
