NATO Jets Respond as Russia Launches Major Attack on Ukraine
NATO fighter jets were deployed on the night of March 15, 2024, following a significant assault by Russia involving a coordinated drone and missile attack on Ukraine. The attack resulted in at least four fatalities, including two children, and approximately 30 injuries in the capital, Kyiv. Local officials anticipate that the death toll may increase as rescue operations continue.
According to Kyiv’s city administration head, Tymur Tkachenko, the Russian military employed a mix of decoy drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, striking at least 20 locations across seven districts of the city. Almost 100 buildings sustained damage, including a shopping centre located in a busy area, while thousands of windows were shattered across various neighborhoods.
A five-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district was reportedly hit directly by a missile, and a strike in central Kyiv left a major thoroughfare littered with broken glass. “Everything is destroyed,” Tkachenko stated, highlighting the extent of the destruction in the city.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that two children were among the deceased, based on preliminary reports. Rescue teams are actively working to extricate individuals trapped under the rubble, and authorities expect further casualties as recovery efforts progress. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, described the assault as a “massive attack” on the capital, marking one of the most severe escalations in the ongoing conflict.
The assault on March 15 is noted as the first significant combined drone and missile strike on Kyiv since a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska earlier this month, where discussions were held regarding the protracted conflict in Ukraine.
In response to the attacks, the Polish armed forces confirmed that both Polish and allied Gripen fighter jets stationed in Poland were scrambled as a precautionary measure. The operational command stated that the aircraft operations concluded around 05:30 BST, and there were “no violations” of Polish airspace during the incident.
As tensions escalate, the situation remains fluid. The international community is closely monitoring developments, with concerns about the potential for further military actions in the region.
