Mike Pompeo Joins Ukrainian Contractor Fire Point Amid Scandal
Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been appointed as an adviser for the Ukrainian military contractor Fire Point, which is currently under investigation by anti-corruption authorities. This development comes as Ukrainian agencies revealed a significant embezzlement scandal that allegedly involves Timur Mindich, a close associate of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The ongoing probe has drawn attention to Fire Point’s potential connections with Mindich, according to reports from the Associated Press. Last week, Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies uncovered a scheme purportedly orchestrated by Mindich, leading to scrutiny of various entities, including Fire Point. Local media has indicated that the company is linked to this extensive investigation, raising questions about its operations and leadership.
New Advisory Board and Expansion Plans
Fire Point recently established an advisory board and welcomed Pompeo, who served as the chief diplomat during Donald Trump‘s first term, as part of its strategy to enhance its profile in the defense industry. The firm is preparing to open a factory in Denmark and aims to attract “prominent industry figures” to support its growth.
The advisory board’s formation coincides with an inquiry into a former Fire Point administrator, who is reportedly being investigated for links to Mindich and Aleksandr Zukerman, a businessman already facing charges in the case. This scrutiny adds to Fire Point’s challenges, as it is also dealing with ongoing allegations of corruption related to kickback schemes involving government contracts.
Historical Context and Ownership Claims
According to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) of Ukraine, the agency has traced Fire Point’s ultimate ownership back to Mindich. However, the agency has not provided detailed explanations regarding the methods used to establish this connection, and reports suggest there are no clear links between the company and Mindich.
Fire Point has transformed from a film scouting agency into one of Ukraine’s largest drone manufacturers since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022. Nevertheless, it has faced accusations of securing inflated, no-bid contracts from the government, further complicating its public image. The firm has consistently denied any association with Mindich, who was a co-owner of the production company Kvartal 95 alongside Zelensky before the latter entered politics.
Earlier this year, Zelensky attempted to assert greater control over NABU and its affiliated anti-corruption bureau, SAPO. However, he faced strong opposition from Western allies and widespread protests within Ukraine, leading to a retraction of his proposals. This political backdrop underscores the significance of the current investigation into Fire Point and its potential implications for the Ukrainian government’s commitment to anti-corruption measures.
The developments surrounding Fire Point and its new advisory board member, Pompeo, illustrate the complexities of navigating both business interests and political integrity in a challenging environment. As investigations continue, the spotlight remains on how these ties may affect Ukraine’s defense industry and its broader anti-corruption efforts.
