Man Released After Brown University Shooting Leaves Community Shocked
A man detained as a “person of interest” following a tragic shooting at Brown University has been released, according to local authorities. The incident, which occurred on October 28, 2023, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left nine others critically injured during an exam review session at the Ivy League institution in Providence, Rhode Island.
The release was confirmed by Attorney General Peter Neronha, who stated that evidence previously suggesting the man’s involvement had shifted in a new direction. He remarked, “Certainly, there was some degree of evidence that pointed to this individual. But that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed. Over the last 24 hours, that evidence now points in a different direction.” Neronha emphasized the importance of careful investigation, especially for the sake of the victims and their families.
Details of the Incident
The shooting unfolded around 16:00 local time in the Barus and Holley building, part of Brown University’s engineering school, where approximately 400 students were gathered for exams. According to Rachel Friedberg, an economics professor, the chaos began when the assailant entered the classroom and opened fire. She recounted her teaching assistant’s account: “He said that the shooter came in the doors, yelled something—he couldn’t remember what he yelled—and started shooting. Students started to scramble to try to get away from the shooter.”
In response to the shooting, more than 400 armed law enforcement officers, including local police and FBI agents, were deployed to the scene to secure the area and evacuate students. Brown University President Christina Paxson expressed her deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “This is a day that we hoped never would come to our community. It is deeply devastating for all of us.”
Community Response and Investigation
Following the shooting, the university was placed on lockdown as terrified students were instructed to shelter in place. Officials have since lifted that advisory but are continuing their search for additional video footage related to the incident. Investigators are canvassing the area surrounding the university for further evidence.
In light of the incident, US President Donald Trump, while returning to the White House, characterized the shooting as “a terrible thing” and urged prayers for the victims and their families. He stated that the nation must come together in support of those affected by this violence.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains shaken by the events of that afternoon, highlighting the ongoing challenges surrounding gun violence in educational settings. The focus now shifts to ensuring the safety of students and uncovering the full circumstances of this tragic incident.
