Carlos Baleba Discusses Manchester United Transfer Speculation
Carlos Baleba has addressed speculation regarding his potential transfer to Manchester United, acknowledging that discussions of a move may have affected his performance this season. The 20-year-old midfielder, who plays for Brighton & Hove Albion, was heavily linked with a transfer to Old Trafford during the summer window, with reports suggesting a staggering asking price of £100 million.
Since the transfer window closed, Baleba has featured in 15 matches for Brighton, yet his form has been called into question. Some fans have speculated that the intense transfer rumors may have influenced his on-field performances. In an interview with Sky Sports on Sunday, Baleba stated, “I don’t think it affected me negatively, but I had a lot of pressure on me. When I started this season, I wanted to show the same performances as last season.” He added that while he might have put pressure on himself, he views it as a positive motivator to return to his best form.
Manchester United’s Continued Interest
Despite a mixed start to the season, Baleba is reportedly once again on Manchester United’s radar as the club looks to strengthen its midfield ahead of the January transfer window. United struggled to reinforce their squad during the summer, leaving coach Ruben Amorim with limited options.
According to Sky Sports journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Brighton’s valuation of Baleba may have softened since the summer. The club could now consider offers around €85 million (£74.3 million), which is a significant decrease from the previous asking price. This change could open the door for United, who are keen to capitalize on the situation.
Adding another layer to the transfer narrative, Baleba is believed to prefer a move to Manchester United over Bayern Munich, who are also interested in the young talent amid uncertainty surrounding Leon Goretzka’s future at the club.
Potential Impact on Other Transfers
Manchester United’s interest in Baleba is not the only transfer development to watch as the January window approaches. The club is also monitoring Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, alongside other targets. However, competition from Premier League rivals could complicate any potential deal.
Additionally, United faces pressure regarding the future of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. The 20-year-old is eager for more playing time and has attracted interest from Napoli. While United would prefer a loan arrangement for Mainoo, the lack of incoming midfield reinforcements could hinder his chances of leaving in January.
Looking ahead, Manchester United is scheduled to face Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday. A victory would elevate them to fifth place in the Premier League table, providing a timely boost as they navigate both league and transfer challenges.
