The M48 Severn Bridge in Gloucestershire has been closed in both directions due to strong winds, causing significant travel disruptions for motorists. National Highways announced the closure, which affects traffic between Junction 1 and Junction 2, advising drivers to consider the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as an alternative route. The closure follows a week of hazardous weather conditions across the UK, largely attributed to Storm Goretti.

Wind gusts have been reported to exceed safe levels, prompting the closure. According to National Highways, “Road users are advised to use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as an alternate route.” This bridge features barriers designed to mitigate the impact of high winds, unlike the older design of the M48 Severn Bridge, which lacks such safety measures.

When wind speeds reach approximately 40 knots (46 mph), the M48 Severn Bridge is closed to all traffic, remaining shut until conditions improve. If wind speeds exceed 70 knots (80 mph), authorities will close both the M48 and M4 bridges. During such closures, motorists can divert to alternate routes including the M5, M50, A40, and A449.

The recent weather disturbances have resulted in a combination of rain, strong winds, and snow across various regions of the UK. The Met Office has reported that Sunday, January 11, 2024, will begin with wet and windy conditions, experiencing heavy bursts of rain at times. As the night progresses, the rain is expected to clear from the east, giving way to clearer spells but remaining blustery, particularly along coastal areas.

Motorists should prepare for delays and verify travel updates before setting out. Tomorrow will likely bring a mix of bright spells and heavy showers moving in from the southwest, with maximum temperatures around 10 °C. As conditions remain changeable, caution is advised for all drivers navigating the affected routes.
