Zabjelo, a football club located in Podgorica, has emerged as a beacon of local pride and community spirit, despite competing in the third tier of Montenegrin football. Known as the “Republic,” Zabjelo boasts a passionate fan base that spans generations, attracting supporters from young children to octogenarians. The club’s matches have become local festivals, drawing larger crowds than many teams in the top tier.

The enthusiasm of the fans is palpable, with vibrant displays, songs, and chants echoing from the stands. Mirko Joković, the president of Zabjelo, emphasizes the unique connection between the club and its supporters, stating, “Our fans are our twelfth player. They follow us everywhere, whether we play at home or away.”

Seeking Higher Ranks

Currently competing in the Central Region of the third league, Zabjelo has set its sights on promotion. The team is in second place, just four points behind leaders Balkan Iglsi. Joković highlighted the importance of the upcoming derby against Balkan Iglsi, stating, “That match is an opportunity to close the gap. We are giving everything for a win.”

After a rocky start to the season, with two losses, the club underwent a change in management. New coaches, Miloš Lakić and Milorad Šaletić, have turned the season around, leading the team to a series of victories, including a recent win against Ilarion. “We have improved our goal difference and are focused on becoming a member of the Second League by this summer,” Joković added.

Zabjelo’s resurgence has been bolstered by reinforcements during the winter break, with nine new players joining the squad. This blend of youth and experience has invigorated the team, as they aim for a successful season.

Community and Financial Support

The club’s sustainability is also a product of community support and sponsorship. General sponsor Lob, along with other local sponsors and donations from fans, has kept the club afloat. Joković noted, “We are fighting and finding ways to support ourselves. Every bit of help is welcome.”

Podgorica’s mayor, Saša Mujović, has recognized the importance of supporting local clubs like Zabjelo. In a recent meeting with club officials and representatives from Eurozox and Lovćen Bank, Mujović expressed a commitment to securing sponsorships that would enhance the club’s operational capacity. “Zabjelo is a unique football story. Regardless of the opponent or competition level, our stadium is always packed,” he remarked.

With potential new sponsorship deals on the horizon, including support from Lovćen Bank and Eurozox, Joković is optimistic about the future. “With the backing of these companies and our united management and fan base, we can achieve our goal of reaching the First League,” he concluded.

As Zabjelo continues its campaign, the community remains hopeful, rallying behind a club that embodies the spirit of local football. The upcoming matches will not only determine their standings but also further solidify their place in the hearts of their devoted supporters.
