Woman Arrested for Exploiting Sons for Forced Labor in Montenegro

Podgorica police have arrested a 36-year-old woman, identified as M.M., a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on charges of human trafficking involving her two minor sons. The arrest follows an investigation initiated by the Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica, which led to a formal criminal complaint against the suspect.

Authorities allege that between September and October 2023, M.M. coerced her sons, aged 11 and 16, into forced labor. The police report indicates that she exploited their difficult living conditions and dependent relationship by forcing them to sell food to passersby outside a shopping center in Podgorica. The money earned from these sales was then handed over to her.

Police Focus on Child Victims

The Montenegrin police are prioritizing the identification of victims and the prosecution of crimes related to human trafficking. They emphasize that combatting all forms of trafficking and violations of basic human rights is a national priority.

Law enforcement officials have stated, “Our focus is directed towards minor victims of human trafficking, given the severity of this crime, which threatens their dignity, safety, health, and overall development.” The police have pledged to enhance their efforts in addressing such issues, particularly in protecting vulnerable populations.
