Wild Swimmer Creates Snow Shark Sculpture in Loch Vaa
A striking snow sculpture resembling a great white shark has emerged at Loch Vaa in Cairngorms National Park, captivating both locals and visitors. The creation, crafted by wild swimmer Fiona Clarke, was spotted circling near the shoreline, drawing attention for its impressive design and the story behind its making.
The sculpture, which Clarke describes as a “snow shark,” quickly became a focal point after her adventurous dip in the frigid waters yesterday afternoon. Wild swimmers often brave the cold temperatures, but Clarke’s artistic endeavor added a unique twist to her swim. She explained, “It took a couple of hours to create the shark,” emphasizing the effort that went into the project.
While Clarke was working on her creation, she received assistance from Rory Whytock and his sister Heather Cameron-Whytock, who happened upon the scene. “Rory had a dip in the pre-cut water hole next to me,” Clarke recounted. The trio collaborated to bring the snow shark to life, with their friend Nicky Howell joining just in time for the photo opportunity.
Photographer Travis Toy, who captured the event for Highlens, shared his experience of meeting Clarke. “I was out in Aviemore getting some content of the frozen lochs when we bumped into Fiona,” he stated. Toy’s photographs showcase both the creative process and the final result of the snow sculpture, highlighting the community spirit surrounding this unusual winter activity.
Clarke, a well-known figure in the local swimming community, previously made headlines when she was photographed with a snow sculpture of a penguin at Loch Vaa last year. This new creation raises the question of what she might attempt next. With a hint of humor, she suggested, “The next one is going to be Nessie with a See You Jimmy hat.”
Loch Vaa, located just north of Aviemore, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, especially those drawn to wild swimming. The area’s natural beauty and the recent cold snap have provided a perfect backdrop for winter activities, including snow sculpture creation. The sight of a shark in such a serene environment is both unexpected and delightfully whimsical, much to the amusement of onlookers.
As winter continues to grip the region, Clarke’s imaginative project has inspired a sense of fun and creativity among the community, inviting others to explore their artistic sides amidst the snow.
