Christmas Spirit Fades as Decorations Come Down
As the festive season concludes, many households are beginning to dismantle their Christmas decorations. Nicola Chester reflects on the emotional significance of this tradition, highlighting the personal memories and connections tied to each ornament. The act of taking down decorations marks a transition from the lively spirit of Christmas back to everyday life.
The practice of removing decorations varies widely, with some adhering to the traditional end date of the festive period, known as Twelfth Night, which is celebrated on January 5 or 6. Chester expresses her reluctance to comply with strict customs, instead opting for a more individual approach to bidding farewell to the holiday season.
In recent years, she has chosen to source her Christmas tree from Willis Farm, a sustainable farm located in the downs. This decision reflects a commitment to environmentally friendly practices. Chester’s tree is adorned with a collection of baubles that carry deep personal meaning, including cherished items from her childhood. Notable decorations include a wooden goose and a beaver nestled in a walnut shell, both purchased during a memorable trip to Banff, Alberta, in 1989.
Each ornament tells a story, evoking memories of family and tradition. Chester’s tree features an eclectic mix of decorations, such as silver acorns, golden apples, and whimsical animals like a badger in a dressing gown. The decorations represent a blend of irreverence and reverence, capturing the joy of the season while also celebrating the passage of time.
As she prepares to dismantle her festive setup, Chester contemplates the various items she will preserve. The now-dry mistletoe will be frozen and pressed into apple tree branches come spring, symbolizing hope for renewal and growth. Meanwhile, the remnants of the wreath will be scattered throughout her garden, contributing to the natural landscape.
Chester’s home, a 1950s cottage, has served as a backdrop for these cherished memories. For over twenty years, a swag of tinsel has adorned her banister, but this year it will take on a new role, creating a grotto-like atmosphere in her kitchen arch. This transformation illustrates the adaptability of traditions and the ongoing evolution of personal space.
As she dismantles the decorations, Chester also engages in a ritual of sorts. The greenery collected from her home will be burned in her fireplace, sending sparks into the night sky, creating a stunning visual display. This act, a farewell to the festive season, emphasizes a connection to nature and the cycles of life.
In her writings, Chester captures the essence of these seasonal transitions, noting the significance of each item and the memories they evoke. The reflections shared in her piece serve as a reminder that the end of the festive season does not simply signify the end of joy, but rather a continuation of cherished traditions in new forms.
Her work appears in the collection titled Under the Changing Skies: The Best of the Guardian’s Country Diary, 2018-2024, published by Guardian Faber. This compilation celebrates the beauty of rural life and the changing seasons, inviting readers to appreciate the small moments that define our experiences.
