A man from Wakefield has received a substantial prison sentence for his involvement in a series of serious offences, including rape and coercive control. Alexander Julien, aged 34 and residing in Castelford, was sentenced to a total of nine and a half years in prison by Leeds Crown Court on January 22, 2023. The court heard that the rape occurred in the Wakefield District in 2022, a charge that Julien denied.

The sentencing included a five-year term for the rape of a woman aged over 16, alongside two years for two counts of coercive and controlling behaviour. These two sentences will run concurrently but are consecutive to the rape sentence. Julien maintained his innocence regarding all allegations throughout the trial.

Detective Constable Adele Bossons of the Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “I’m pleased that Julien has been handed a lengthy sentence that reflects the severity of his offending.” She emphasized the bravery exhibited by victims in such cases, indicating that the conviction may bring some measure of comfort to those affected by similar experiences.

The jury found Julien guilty after a trial in December, leading to the current sentence. In addition to the charges related to sexual offences, Julien also received a further two years and six months for separate drug offences, which will run consecutively to his other sentences.

The investigation was conducted by the Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit, part of the West Yorkshire Police. Detective Constable Bossons highlighted the importance of support systems in place for victims of sexual violence. She encouraged anyone who has experienced such offences to reach out for help.

“Victims of this type of offending show tremendous bravery in coming forward,” she stated. “We have dedicated safeguarding teams across West Yorkshire Police who are trained to support victims of sexual abuse and violence.”

The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding sexual violence and the importance of legal recourse for victims. It also underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to support and protect those who come forward to report such crimes.
