Unraveling a UFO Mystery: Yugoslav Pilots Encounter Unknown Objects

In January 1975, pilots from the Yugoslav Air Force experienced a series of unexplained phenomena over Montenegro and the Adriatic Sea. Nearly every night, they reported sightings of a glowing orb displaying astonishing speed and maneuverability, defying the laws of conventional physics. Filmmaker Miloš Škundrić, inspired by these events, is working on a film titled “Šifra Vuk,” which aims to document these mysterious encounters.

The incidents spanned from mid-January to mid-February 1975, during which pilots from the 172nd Aviation Regiment based in Golubovci consistently observed a luminous sphere hovering over various locations, including Lovćen, Cetinje, and the entire Adriatic coast up to Dubrovnik. Škundrić describes how these events unfolded, noting that dozens of pilots witnessed the same phenomenon, which remained inexplicable by known scientific principles.

Witnesses recounted one notable encounter involving a G-2 “Galeb” military aircraft, where an African cadet and his instructor suddenly spotted a massive, glowing orb in the night sky. The object hovered briefly before darting away at incredible speeds, leaving the pilots astonished.

The military’s response to these sightings was serious, given the geopolitical tensions of the time. General Enver Ćemalović, then commander of the Air Force and Air Defense, ordered the deployment of supersonic MiG-21 fighters armed with guided missiles to intercept the unidentified object, which had been codenamed “Vuk.” Despite repeated attempts to engage the object, the MiGs consistently failed to make contact, leading to skepticism among military leaders regarding the pilots’ reports.

The situation intensified when the sightings coincided with a visit from Tito, the Yugoslav leader, to the Bay of Kotor. This led to a heightened urgency in attempts to identify the object. Captain Ivan Mamić, one of the pilots, explained that when ordered to fire upon the object, it executed maneuvers that seemed beyond the capabilities of any known aircraft, disappearing and reappearing in mere moments.

The military’s initial dismissal of the pilots’ claims transformed after multiple sightings, including a report from the crew of the vessel “Galeb,” which was carrying Tito at the time. The reports gained validity, prompting further investigation. In one instance, radar operators at Prevlaka detected an object moving at speeds of 7,000 kilometers per hour, only for it to vanish as the MiG-21s approached.

Despite extensive documentation and numerous testimonies, the physical evidence of these encounters has largely been lost. Many reports were archived, but a significant portion was destroyed during airstrikes in 1999. Today, only pilot logs, private notes, and interviews with key witnesses like General Zvonko Jurjević and Captain Mamić remain, showcasing a consistent narrative of the encounters.

Škundrić emphasizes the significance of these events, stating that they represent one of the most authentic UFO incidents in Europe. He aims to shed light on a time when pilots believed they could control the skies, only to face phenomena that defied all rational explanations. His film will explore not only the mystery of the sightings but also the courage and fear experienced by those who witnessed them.

As for the fate of the enigmatic object, it has not been sighted since those winter nights in 1975, though reports of similar phenomena emerged in subsequent years, including sightings by NATO pilots during the 1999 conflict. Whether the mystery of the “Vuk” remains unsolved above the skies of Montenegro or if it will resurface remains an open question, as new generations of pilots take to the air, perhaps awaiting their own encounters with the unknown.
