Ukraine Launches Global Initiative for Peace Education in Schools
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has initiated a global call for teachers, schools, and youth programs to participate in a unique lesson titled “Snapshots from Ukraine: Untold Stories of Teenagers.” This educational initiative was first introduced at the Fifth Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen and aims to share the authentic experiences of Ukrainian teenagers affected by conflict.
Designed by Ukrainian educators and experts, the lesson offers students worldwide a chance to hear true stories from their Ukrainian peers who have grown up amidst war. The narratives focus on the challenges, hopes, and dreams of these young individuals. They include experiences such as studying in an underground school near the frontline, forced deportation of teenagers to Russia, and the loss of friends during Russian shelling.
“This lesson speaks to resilience, humanity, and the values that persist even in times of war,” said Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine. She emphasized that it serves as a reminder that peace is a value to be cherished and never taken for granted. “The peace lesson we prepared for the summit is not just another school class. It reminds us that peace begins in the heart of each person and is reflected in their daily actions,” she noted.
Oksen Lisoviy, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, echoed this sentiment, stating that fostering humanity, empathy, and cooperation begins in schools. He called on education ministries and teachers worldwide to join this initiative, emphasizing that the lesson teaches children compassion, understanding, and respect while countering disinformation.
How the Initiative Works
Teachers from any country can implement this lesson in their classrooms, youth centers, or cultural programs. It is tailored for educators in subjects such as history, geography, language, philosophy, and ethics. The program is also suitable for mentors, tutors, and class leaders, as well as Ukrainian students studying abroad temporarily.
The materials are specifically designed for students aged 14 to 18 who wish to learn more about Ukraine, the ongoing war, its causes, and the everyday lives of their peers during these challenging times. All lesson materials are available free of charge in multiple languages, ensuring accessibility for a global audience.
This initiative aims not only to educate but also to inspire a new generation capable of building bridges rather than walls, reinforcing the need for understanding and respect across cultures. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine encourages worldwide participation, recognizing the potential of young people to foster peace and uphold human values.
In conclusion, the “Snapshots from Ukraine: Untold Stories of Teenagers” lesson represents a significant step towards promoting global awareness and understanding of the impacts of conflict on youth. By engaging students in dialogue about resilience and hope, it encourages them to envision a more peaceful future.
