Trump Eyes Replacement for Powell as Fed Chair, Names Remain Secret
Donald Trump indicated on January 17, 2024, during an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that he has potentially narrowed down his selection for a replacement for Jerome Powell as chair of the Federal Reserve. While he refrained from revealing the name of his choice, he mentioned that he is “down to maybe one” candidate.
In an interview with CNBC host Joe Kernen, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with Powell, criticizing him for not lowering interest rates significantly enough and for reacting negatively to positive economic indicators. Trump stated, “If you announce great numbers, the stock market goes down. Because they think ‘Oh, they’re going to raise the [interest] rate. They’re going to kill it.’” He argued that this mindset hampers economic growth and prevents what he termed a “great run” in the market.
Trump’s ongoing criticism of Powell has raised concerns among investors and lawmakers, particularly given the political implications surrounding the Federal Reserve. His comments come as the Department of Justice has initiated investigations into Powell’s decisions during his tenure, prompting apprehension among members of both parties. Recently, Senate Majority Leader John Thune cautioned the administration regarding the gravity of these allegations, stating, “They better be real and they better be serious.”
The Implications of the Investigation on Powell’s Future
The investigation into Powell could complicate the process of appointing a new chair when his term expires in May 2024. Powell currently serves as a governor of the Federal Reserve, a position he may choose to maintain regardless of the outcome of the chair position. Typically, Fed chairs step down from their governor roles after leaving the top job, but exceptions can occur.
Trump’s efforts to replace Powell are occurring against the backdrop of heightened attempts by the White House to influence the Federal Reserve’s independence. Two Republican senators, Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski, have announced their intention to place a hold on nominations for Powell’s successor until the DOJ’s investigation concludes. Tillis remarked on social media, “If there were any remaining doubt whether advisers within the Trump Administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none.”
Despite expressing a willingness to change leadership at the Federal Reserve, Trump previously indicated that it was “highly unlikely” he would terminate Powell. This statement followed discussions with Republican lawmakers regarding the potential firing of the chair, during which Trump showed them a draft termination letter. Ultimately, he reassured them, “No, we’re not planning on doing anything.”
As the political landscape evolves, the fate of Powell and the Federal Reserve remains uncertain. The outcome of the DOJ investigation, coupled with Trump’s search for a successor, will likely shape the future of monetary policy in the United States. The developments will be closely watched by market participants and political analysts alike as they unfold in the coming months.
