Trump Appoints Markwayne Mullin as Homeland Security Secretary

US President Donald Trump has appointed Republican senator Markwayne Mullin as the new Secretary of Homeland Security, replacing Kristi Noem amid ongoing criticism of the department’s leadership. If confirmed by the Senate, Mullin will be the first Native American to serve in this role since the department’s inception in 2003. The announcement came via Trump’s social media platform on Thursday, during a partial government shutdown that has halted funding for the agency.

The leadership change follows significant scrutiny of Noem’s management, with some Republican colleagues expressing discontent. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, for example, labeled her tenure as a “disaster.” Noem will transition to a newly created role as “Special Envoy of the Americas,” a position set to commence from Florida on Saturday.

As he steps into this pivotal role, Mullin, a member of the Cherokee Nation, will oversee agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The senator, who represented Oklahoma’s second congressional district from 2013 until his recent election to the Senate in a special election in 2022, has demonstrated unwavering support for Trump. Notably, he voted to confirm all of Trump’s cabinet nominations, including Noem.

Mullin is known for his assertive political style. Speaking ahead of the State of the Union address, he referred to himself as a “close ally” of Trump, claiming the president has delivered “the most secure southern border in American history” without altering existing laws. He stated, “It turns out, all we needed was a new president.”

Mullin’s appointment has not gone without controversy. Critics have raised concerns about his temperament and fitness for the role, particularly in light of a widely circulated video from a Senate committee hearing in November 2023. During this hearing, Mullin challenged Sean O’Brien, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, to a physical altercation, prompting Bernie Sanders, an independent senator, to intervene and remind Mullin of his responsibilities.

Opponents have also scrutinized Mullin’s past, including photographs from the January 6 Capitol riot, where he was seen taking cover. These images have led to questions about his judgment and temperament as he prepares for a role that requires significant leadership and crisis management skills.

The nomination now moves to the Senate, where Mullin will seek approval from a Republican caucus that holds 53 seats. A simple majority of 51 votes is necessary for confirmation, with Vice President JD Vance available to cast a tie-breaking vote if needed. Historically, every Trump cabinet nomination presented to the Senate in 2025 has been approved, setting a positive precedent for Mullin’s confirmation.

While his formal nomination is pending, Mullin is allowed to serve as the acting Secretary of Homeland Security under federal laws governing executive vacancies. As he prepares to lead a critical agency during a time of heightened attention to national security issues, the political landscape remains charged with reactions from both supporters and detractors.

Mullin’s appointment signifies a shift in leadership that will be closely monitored as he navigates the complexities of homeland security amidst ongoing challenges.
