Trinity Rodman Signs Record-Breaking Deal with Washington Spirit
United States forward Trinity Rodman has signed a groundbreaking three-year contract with the Washington Spirit, securing her place at the club through 2028. This deal, announced on January 14, 2024, makes Rodman the highest-paid player in league history, with an annual salary exceeding $1 million, according to her agent Mike Senkowski of Upper 90 Sports Group.
The announcement came during a press event held at BMO Field in Los Angeles, where Rodman is currently training with the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT). “I’ve made the DMV my home and the Spirit my family,” Rodman stated in a release. “I’m excited about where this club is headed. We’re chasing championships and raising the standard, and I can’t wait to keep doing that with my teammates and the best fans in the NWSL.”
Rodman’s contract saga has generated significant public interest and speculation over the past several months. She had been without a contract since her previous agreement expired on December 31, 2023. Reports suggested that Rodman received lucrative offerings from international clubs, particularly in England, which the Spirit could not match due to the constraints of the NWSL salary cap, set at $3.5 million per team for 2025.
In late November 2023, the Spirit and Rodman reached a preliminary agreement on a four-year contract, which would have backloaded her salary to over $1 million annually. However, NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman rejected the deal, citing violations of league rules regarding salary cap management. This prompted the NWSL Players Association (NWSLPA) to file a grievance, asserting that the league’s intervention constituted a “flagrant violation” of Rodman’s free agency rights.
In response to the ongoing situation, the NWSL’s board of governors approved a new High Impact Player (HIP) rule in December 2023. This rule allows teams to spend up to $1 million above the salary cap for star players meeting specific criteria. The establishment of this policy was reportedly expedited due to the urgency surrounding Rodman’s situation, as losing her to a European club would have been a significant blow to the league, particularly after the departures of other USWNT stars.
At the announcement event, Michele Kang, owner of the Spirit, expressed gratitude for Rodman’s decision to remain with the team. “Not only me personally but all of us at the Spirit are profoundly grateful that she has chosen to stay with us for another three years despite some very compelling alternatives she had,” Kang remarked.
Rodman’s journey in professional soccer began when she was drafted second overall by the Spirit in the 2021 NWSL Draft. Initially committed to Washington State University, she opted to turn professional and quickly made an impact, helping her team secure its first NWSL Championship in her rookie season. Her performance included scoring in the semifinal and assisting in the championship-winning goal.
Following her successful rookie campaign, Rodman signed a four-year deal worth $1.1 million, making her the highest-paid player in the league at that time. Although this contract has since been eclipsed by other deals, her recent signing reinstates her status as a leading figure in women’s soccer.
The landscape of women’s soccer continues to evolve, with the NWSLPA opposing the criteria-driven nature of the newly created HIP rule and filing a grievance on January 14, 2024. This ongoing tension reflects the complexities teams face as they navigate the league’s financial regulations while attempting to retain top talent.
As the Washington Spirit prepares for the upcoming season, Rodman’s commitment signals a hopeful outlook for the club and the league. Her presence is anticipated to inspire young athletes across the country, reinforcing the importance of women’s sports and the impact of high-caliber players like her.
